Hi,

About three weeks ago, I've started a playthrough of BG1 EasyTuTu. I've installed these mods, in the given order:

- EasyTuTu, DeGreenifier, BG1 GUI
- BG1 Unfinished Business
- BG1 NPC Project
- EasyTuTu spawn randomizer
- 2DA XPCap Remover

The game is installed in "D:\Games\Baldur's Gate", and the entire "D:\Games" folder and all subfolders are excluded from MS Security Essentials. I don't know if these things make any difference. In the middle of the game, I also installed One Pixel Productions (only the parts to get shields and potions and such to look like the BG1 versions), which seemd to be working fine. I have been playing with 3D Acceleration enabled.

The game worked fine, up to Cloakwood 2. There, I had my first crash. At that point, I did absolutely everything south of the Friendly Arm Inn, except for Durlag's Tower, without a single crash. (I installed the 1PP mod far before I entered Cloakwood, by the way.)

After that first crash in Cloakwood 2, the game is highly unreliable. As I updated my video card driver somewhere in the middle of this playthrough without changing anything else, I returned to the version I started the playthrough with. (I used DriverSweeper to remove all remnants of any old drivers.)

This does not help. The game is crashing randomly: while walking, while standing still, while reading a scroll, when dealing with a shop keeper, when transitioning to other area's, and once, in the middle of a quick save. I've tried to use 3D Acceleration, the DirectDraw Fix by Aqrit, the ForceDirectDrawEmulation setting use the compatibility toolkit, and even 16-bit colors and the BLT-options. I've actually re-installed everything to make sure no files were corrupted. Nothing works. After that first crash in CW2, BG1 EasyTuTu has become so unreliable that I'm quicksaving like mad. The only thing I couldn't do was return to a savegame made before entering Cloakwood, because I only use two savegames: one on the beginning of an area, and a quicksave game. (Maybe I should change that practice and keep older savegames.)

I don't feel like restarting the game, as it would cost me another three weeks to catch up to where I am now; just at the moment of entering Baldur's Gate for the first time. I've actually abandoned some playthroughs between 2007 and 2013, because of various reasons, but now I'd like to finish the game again before starting BG2 with the same character.

Does anybody have an idea where this sudden instability could be coming from? (While googling, I've seen that Cloakwood 2 is also often mentioned as an unstable area in the Enhanced Edition... makes one wonder.)

Your save game has some sort of corruption in it, that much is almost certain. Really, you answered your own question, and also gave the solution: you need to keep separate saves at regular intervals. They take next to no hard drive space, so there is no excuse not to make more than one. If you think it is not your save game, then I say start a new game, with a new character, and see if the game crashes.
To see if the game crashes when starting over, I'd potentially need to play right through to Cloakwood again. I do have other savegames, for Beregost, Naskel, etc, but I reuse them each time I visit these cities. If I'd want a savegame before Cloakwood, I'll have to go back to the one just after leaving the Naskel mines. IIRC, I didn't revisit Naskel after entering Cloakwood; I did revisit Beregost and FAI (and saved there).

No, you wouldn't. In your own words: "The game is crashing randomly: while walking, while standing still, while reading a scroll, when dealing with a shop keeper, when transitioning to other area's, and once, in the middle of a quick save."

That means if it is truly a random problem (ie. not a corrupt save game), the game would crash with the same randomness with a new character, from the beginning. I tell you, it is your save game.

I've taken a look at my external backup drive. I make regular backups of folders that change often, and savegame folders are included. I do have a backup savegame called "To Cloakwood" on the external drive. It would set me back about 20 game days, and require that I redo the four Cloakwood area's, the Mines, the Ulcaster area, Gullykin, and Firewine Bridge above and below ground.

Even so, when using this save game, I'm not happy with the situation. It is a possibility that there is no problem with a new game, and that this problem is introduced by one of the Cloakwood area's, even if the game does not crash. In that case, I would need to play up until Cloakwood to see if the problem returns. I have read in several threads that Cloakwood 2 was a major PITA in early versions of BG1TuTu, and it also comes up quite often with regard to Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition. In addition, Cloakwood 4 (AR1700) gets mentioned often with regard to crashing BG:EE.

If the problem is NOT introduced by one of the Cloakwood area's and a new game also crashes randomly, then I'm at a complete loss, as I don't understand what is causing it. The only thing that's changed was the video driver, and that change has been reverted already. (And the game was actually re-installed too.)

The Beregost Crash Fixer utility rebuilds savegames from the ground up after fixing Beregost, which seems to regularly fix games even if there is no problem with the Beregost area itself. Before falling back on the "To Cloakwood"-save, I'm going to try this first.

Within 10 minutes after starting, and entering Baldur's Gate, the game crashed again.

The Beregost Crash Fixer did not fix this problem by rebuilding the savegame. Sigh. Back to Cloakwood it is.

I've installed the ForceDirectDrawEmulation fix using the Application Compatibilty Toolkit, and set the game to use 32-bit color. The display is fine, with no glitches. (I prefer it over 3D Acceleration because of the green water outside Durlag's Tower... although it's a minor bug, I admit.)

Up until now, I've cleaered the entire Cloakwood 1 area without crashing. I've entered Cloakwood 2, and made a new save, and did a quicksave, but I haven't expored that area yet. I just hope it doesn't crash and I'll be saving regularly now, and return to the save before the last one... hoping that the Cloakwood area's are not corrupting the savegames.

I'd hate to restart from the beginning *AGAIN*, and I don't think I can play a Vanilla BG1 anymore, now that I'm used to playing it in the BG2 engine and at 800x600....

IMO This is the likely cause... post your weidu log but at a guess the extra Jaheira quest in the woods is conflicting with the spawn randomizer. I’ve already recommended using this easytutu with GoG but it’s your game m8.
Wow.... *playthrough comes to a screeching halt again*

Where did you get that information that the Spawn Randomizer conflicts with Jaheira's quest? I've found or read nothing with regard to that. However, as Jaheira's quest does start in Cloakwood 1, it could be that it does indeed conflict; it might even happen while Jaheira is not in the party. (She's not, in my case.) If the savegame gets corrupted in Cloakwood 1 because of this, it's not surprising the game starts crashing in Cloakwood 1 and beyond.

By the way: I am using the latest EasyTuTu, released on April 8, 2012.

If the Spawn Randomizer is indeed causing this problem, what would be the recommended course?
- Just de-install it, and re-do Cloakwood again (I only did Cloakwood 1 yesterday).
- Re-install the entire game from scratch again and then re-do Cloakwood 1.

If I have to choose between the BG1NPC Project and the spawn randomizer, I'll go for the first one. I can live with the extra creatures, as I normally don't return to an area I've visited.

Personal experience, I had a similar issue which I eventually solved by removing it. Your log all looks mostly fine to me... I’m not familiar with 1PP myself but would have thought something like “Miscellaneous content fixes” should be higher up the list i.e. before unfinished business?

The only other issues I would test for is the three Audio Restorations because a corrupt wav or Bif file is easy to do and would cause a crash at that point as well.

That 8th April 2012 build has the GoG fixes built in and is the current one.

p.s. some types of media player will decide that all files of a certain type belong to it and will lock them but this issue should just need a reinstall (not a restart) which you have already tried.
Yes your 1PP modifys the baldur.exe, so that should be near the top, & probably not added to an existing game.
USSNorway: The mods install themselves in that order. I can't move "Miscellaneous content fixes" before Unfinished Business without moving the entire mod there. I don't think this makes a difference. I've seen no recommendation to install 1PP before UB or the other way around. Also, I have not been able to find any reference to a conflict between the Spawn Randomizer and BG1NPC Jaheira's quest, so I've left the spawn randomizer in place too.

olnorton: I've installed 1PP's color palette extension in Compatibility Mode so it does not patch the executable. This means that I don't get more colors for my characters to use, but that does not matter. I try to avoid mods that patch the EXE, except if there is no other way and I really want the mod, such as Ghostdog's UI for PS:T.

===

Thinking about it, in hindsight, the probable cause of the problem hit me like a ton of bricks and I was baffled that I didn't think of it before. Somewhere just before, or during Cloakwood, I upgraded my nVidia graphics driver to 320.18. This driver froze my computer twice while browsing, and the first crash of BG (which was then running in 3D Accelerated mode) also occured around that time. After searching Google, I found out that the 320.18 driver had very bad bugs and great stability problems, so I've returned to my previous driver, 310.70. (Which is not the latest, but is working well for half a year already.)

I would not be surprised if the first crash of BG was caused by this crappy driver, damaging the savegame in the process, which in turn caused all the other crashes.

I've restarted Cloakwood yesterday (using the 310.70 driver, with BG running in normal mode, and ForceDirectDrawEmulation installed through the compatibility toolkit), and I'm now through Cloakwood 1 and 2 without a single crash. If I get through Cloakwood 3 and 4, the mines, the Ulcaster map, Gullykin, Firewine above and below ground and then go to Baldur's Gate, I am again where I was at the beginning of this thread.

If I can manage that without a single crash, then I consider the problem resolved.

Crash in Cloakwood 3, after only playing for 5 to 10 minutes. I'll be uninstalling the Spawn Randomizer, and restarting Cloakwood.... AGAIN.

This is starting to become very annoying.

I'm actually thinking of hugging the eastern edge and skip Cloakwood 3 and 4 directly to the mines, if these area's continue to be unstable. Bummer.
This could be the issue.
install order for tutu mods

7.1 BG1UB for Tutu/BGT[PPG] This comprehensive mod includes fixes and restorations, some of which patch materials other mods use.
BG1 Unfinished Business for Tutu/BGT detects The BG1 NPC Project and automatically skip incompatible materials if you install it secons instead of first. If you plan on installing both BG1NPC and BG1UB for Tutu/BGT, do not install the following UB components:
Angelo Notices Shar-Teel
Finishable Kagain Caravan Quest
Coran and the Wyverns
Kivan and Tazok
Branwen and Tranzig

Holy Crappadidoodaa.

The readme's do not mention this. They only say that "checks are made to prevent conflicts".

UB:
Sword Coast Stratagems, EasyTutu, BGT , BG1NPC , and BG Unfinished Business have made special efforts to make sure players can use these mods together without conflict.

BG1 NPC:
We are striving to make BG1 Unfinished Business compatible with as many other mods as possible. Some BG1 Unfinished Business components contain checks for BG1 NPC Project and Northern Tales of the Sword Coast to prevent mod conflicts. Currently there are no other known incompatibilities with Tutu or BGT mods.
So, this only works when installing BG1 NPC first, and then UB? I just trusted the checks, and got the option to install all the components to mentioned, so I did.

Sigh. I just redid Cloackwood 1. There I go again. I'll re-instate the Spawn Randomizer, remove the components you listed, and then restart Cloakwood again. There ARE Wyverns / Wyvern babies in the 3rd map already, aren't there? In that case, the Coran & the Wyvern parts could certainly be responsible for the crash, and / or subsequent savegame corruption.

Thanks for your research in this. I'll remove those components and make a note of that. I'll also reverse the install order in my archived installers. (I've numbered everything, like 1., 2., and so on.)

It's not working. I've now removed the components ussnorway pointed out, but the game still crashes, five minutes into Cloackwood 3. Up until this part, everything is fine.

I think I'm going to wipe the entire installation, and install only EasyTuTu, Unfinished Business, and the Spawn Randomizer; no BG1 NPC or other fan-made content. I have omitted those in all other Infinity Engine games as well.

At this point, I'm sick of BG1. It's the 3rd or 4rd playthrough since 2007 that I have had to abort because of mods. I think I'm going to finish my Icewind Dale 1 run first, and see if Planescape: Torment works using the Widescreen mod and Ghostdog GUI.... I've installe the very latest version 3.06 beta of the Widescreen mod, because it seems that the current 3.05 crashes the game.

Maybe I should just suck it up and play all games vanilla, 640x480 resolution and all, only using the Baldurdash fixes for BG1 and BG2, and the FixPack for Torment. I *KNOW* that this works, because I've finished all games in that way about 10 years ago.
