I have seen this http://www.shsforums.net/ and I wonder what the difference between expansions and quest mods are.
Also do both modtypes blend into vanilla or should you play them on their own(like Arcanum mods)?
Besides the ones mentioned in the mod guide are there mods you would never play without?
And lastly do you have any advice concerning mods not covered in the guide?

Expansion mods 'expand' on what is already in the game. Quest mods can do the same, but can be completely new content, independent of extant content.

As to your second question, see above. They all take place within the game; none are 'standalone'.

You third question is entirely subjective. One person might say 'mod A', while the next person will vilify it. You can only make your own mind up on player-made mods. Use them, then decide. The only exceptions are the well-known bugfix mods. That also covers your last question.

The last 2 questions where individual so it is for every one to answer what he she thinks I can then make up my mind from the advice given by those who reply. Thx for clearing the first 2 questions I still fail to see the difference when they both appear in existing material. Let me see if I got it right? Expansions only adds to existing quests and does not provide more quests while quests are completely new quests but still in the same build of the game?

An expansion doesn't necessarily add to any quest. I said they 'expand' what is already in the game. It might be a massive overhaul mod, or it could be a romance option for one NPC. It is not reliant on quests.

Quest mods are different, in that they DO provide quests. These can also be expansions, but generally revolve around new content.
