The complete saga is 111 MB in size, while even the first game is 158 MB in size, the second one is 226 and so on.
I really don't get it, how is that possible, that the COMPLETE saga is significantly smaller in size, than any of the games individually? Even the price doesn't make sense.
If this is a complete ("Having all necessary or normal parts, components, or steps; entire.") why it is so cheap, and smaller, compared to the individual games?

Does It means, this "complete" saga doesn't contain all the goodies that are part of the games, when someone buys them individually?

It's because the individual games are actually remakes of the games from the complete saga, with a lot of changes made.

Interestingly enough, the original Avernum games are, themselves, remakes of the old Exile games.

If you don't know which one to get, there are demos available.

(Saves from the demo should work on the full version.)

I directly marked my question, and as it said: "Mark as "question / problem" (special category of "help me" topics that encourages others to answer and earn reputation points for solving your question / problem; offtopic chatter is forbidden."

I done this to encourage people to strictly post about the exact question that I asked, because I really sick of reading through hundreds and hundreds of useless posts, wastes hours looking for answers, just to find a tiny bit of information that maybe have something to do with what I looking for.
I done this to avoid posts like yours. Sorry, but I didin't asked anything like that, what you posted about. I nowhere asked about the origination of the game: I didn't asked about which game is a remake of which other game, or about demos of the games.
I asked about (because I realised the huge file size and price differrence) what other things, like the goodies, are come with the individual game which isn't part of the saga.
Or somthing like that, becase it just bugs me so much, how is that possible that 6 games bundled together is smaller than even 1 game. I need indepth, technical explanation about what comes with the individual games, and what comes wih the saga, that explains the huge file size difference. Especially about the goodies, that what I aseked.

Regardless that I can't accept your post as an aswer, thanks fot the info that the saga contains outdated version of the games and that the individual games are improved, later versions (hence the much higher price) of the games. Or whatever you mean by that meaningless "with a lot of changes"... At least it is a bit more information about the games.

Still, I like to know about what goodies the games and the saga contains exactly, so that I can compare them to eachother. If the file size and price difference not just because of the goodies, I like to get more technical explanation what are the difference that makes that huge size difference.

Thanks.

As I said, it's because the individual games are remakes, and as such, the games themselves are significantly bigger than the "originals" that are contained in the "complete saga". To put it another way, the "individual games" are not the same games as those thar are in the collection. (In other words, the fact that the :"individual games" are remakes is 100% relevant.)

Older games tend to be much smaller than newer games, as newer games generally are significantly bigger. As technology progresses, storage capacity increases, bandwidth increases, and as a result, games get bigger to take advantage of said improvements.

Remember, there was a time when computer games were distributed on floppy disks, which could typically store only 1.44 megabytes (or less); those days have passed, and as a result, games got bigger in order to take advantage of the extra space.

The saga is the original versions of Avernum 1-6. The individual games are the remakes. The remakes have improved graphics, interface, sounds, and have even added entirely new areas on the outdoor maps. Also, old and clunky mechanics have been removed- for example, in the originals you'd find a lot of unidentified items and would need to use Identify Scrolls or pay for a wise person to identify them. In the remakes, that was removed entirely. The whole party now gets healed when entering any town- in the old version, you'd need to go into people's rooms or pay for a night at the inn to recover health. Also, it's much harder to steal in the remakes compared to the originals. The best thing I like about the remakes is the loot bag- you can dump loot in there after every dungeon run and not worry about inventory space. In the old Avernum, you'd need to constantly go back and forth from town to dungeon in order to sell your loot. Iron/steel weapons/armor fetch a great price at shops but are quite heavy and a mage/priest with low strength won't be able to carry more than a few of them.

There are many more differences, but in short, that's the reason why the Avernum Saga is cheaper than the remakes, and why the file sizes of the remakes are bigger. Probably graphics and sound effects contribute to the majority of the disparity. Your characters even display animations when walking/fighting in the remakes compared to the originals where they'd just zip around from square to square.

EDIT:

In terms of goodies, the remakes have a few hint books and different wallpapers. All of them have manuals. The original saga has artwork that isn't included in the remakes.

Good info, as I was trying to decide which to buy. You helped me make up my mind. I'll think Avernum 3: Ruined World
is the best choice. I like all the new enhancements including procedurally generated courier missions in every major city when you need cash. It also looks like it has high replay value.

Thanks.
Now I think I didn't really worried about the goodies, because of those mechanics how changed in the reamke.
I really doesn't like it. I playing PC RPG games since I had my first, PC and that was in the 90's.
And all that things you mentioned (that are either removed or changed), those what you refer as 'old and clunky mechanics' are somewhat a 'standard-rpg-experience' to me. Like that you don't have 'unlimited' storage space, so you have to decide what you grab (or go back and forth if you want to pick up everything). Manually identificating the loot is also a normal thing to me.
Even if the garphics are improved in the remake, I think I like the original old-school mechanics better.
Regardless the graphics, all those changes just makes the games "dumber" to my taste, I prefer more 'hardcore' RPG experience with all their limitiations. So this is really good to know.

Tho' I really wanted to know more details about the goodies, I think this is the most helpful post, that explains what really are the changes. So people can choose they want better graphics, but somewaht easier mechanics, or the don't care much about the graphics but like to play the game in the oldschools way, as it is originally come out.
well, if people wanted the truly original experience they'd have to play the exile games, but those are even more primitive than the original avernum (this is getting confusing)
