When you run Avernum escape from the pit using Galaxy it boots the wrong .exe. It should boot the new fixed, Avernum DirectX.exe. The result is you are playing a broken game.
I have had to make a separate shortcut and play the game from that.

What you mean for "broken game" ?

Theres no actual noticeable difference.. Also that's not the definition of a "Broken" game.. look up the word broken..

Oh 1 more thing, The game also States to Only use directx Version IF the OPENGL version doesn't work..

I've tried both. Aside from the graphical backend, there's basically no difference. They load the same savegames, so don't get your knickers in a twist.
