Hey guys, I'm still sort of new to Avernum, got the $2.99 sale the other day. Really lovin' it so far!

Anyway, it didn't take long for me to come across the assets in the directory, and how I could even alter them to my liking. As a sort of dumb joke I put in a bunch of anime girls, complete with silly waifu names (attached below.)

But to take things more seriously, I was just wondering if anyone else wanted their own custom portraits. (Of whatever theme YOU want, heh.) Though replacing the graphics is pretty straightforward, I found that making them look good can be a little confusing and tedious due to the way the game processes the images. (It's not until Av. 6 where *actual* transparency is used in the art, some custom portraits tend to get this weird result with specks of white.) So for anyone interested who doesn't wanna do all the work you can use this as a sort of request thread. Send me the images you want and I'll do it for you!

Here are the restrictions:

Maximum of 4 portraits per person at a time - Enough to get all slots for your playthrough filled so I can get to the next guy.
Images you want can be any size, though bigger is usually better. They must have a transparent background if you want the *best* result. A white background would be the second best result. These type of custom portraits will be able to use the in-game backdrops!
Be sure to tell me which edition of Avernum you want it for, since the graphics are cataloged differently in each game.
It's easier for me to do this for new playthroughs, but if you want custom portraits for a current playthrough, send me a screencap of your party's current portraits / icons so I can put everything in the right place.
Try to make any other specific thing you want (like composition or something) clear to me so that this process goes smoothly!
I have no set schedule for making these, be patient!
I'll announce when I'm no longer taking requests.
And no, I can't do it for Av. 1 because I don't wanna decompile anything. (Which sucks because that's one I'm currently playing.... )

---

And with that, I hope I can help anyone interested! Send in your pics whenever you're ready!

Just wanted to say that looks fucking awesome.

I don't have any anime girls in mind- but, did you happen to create some more "generic" ones? They sure as heck look better than the default game art..
Hey, Skaiano, a very generous offer. Are you still taking requests?
@JackDandy Sorry for the late reply! I think the notification got lost during all the sales D:
Anyway, yeah! I'm up for requests! Send em' in and I'll see what I can do! Just keep the requirements above in mind, though it shouldn't too much trouble. I'd be happy to help! :)

I can probably just surf around and find some stuff to make, though I'm wondering if there was something more specific you were looking for?

Hey, Skaiano, here are 4 pics. They don't really have a theme... well, maybe DnD. They match characters I use in my IWD party.

The fighter pic has a gray background rather than white. I hope that still works.

Maybe one of these will work for JackDandy, too. They're fairly generic, but all female.

Thanks!!!

Edit: forgot to say that I'm requesting them for Avernum IV. I'm mid-game, but after looking at the data file, I think I can give them the correct file names myself. It's just the artistic stuff with the photo software that's out of my league.

Annnnd done! This was actually interesting, looks like Avernum IV can only handle images that are only 256-color .bmp's, which is actually step down from the 24bit .bmp's that Avernum II can handle! (That is if I remember correctly) I'm only saying this because it can cause a dramatic amount of color loss if someone renders through something like MS Paint. Luckily, GIMP has this amazing "indexed mode" which limits the colors to 256, but in a way that really keeps a lot of the quality!

Now just a couple of notes:
- Some parts may be cut off, mainly to keep the characters in "center view." The archer's arrow may look a bit weird on the overhead roster, but I think it looks pretty good with the inventory screen.
- The black outlines are to "clean up" the outline. Early on it was actually used because that's how the earlier games knew where to "cut" the image. But in any case, when I remove the white space background from the images there's usually some excess pixels that I gotta shave off, the outline just brings it back together.

Whew, anyway they all should be plug-n-play! The names I gave them were only so I could test them, you said you would go ahead and fix them yourself so feel free! I hope you enjoy them, if you have any gripes / troubles don't hesitate to let me know! Cheers!

Thank you so much! They're beautiful!!!

I've been trying to do this myself for a while now, with bad results every time. (Googling how to make custom portraits for Avernum IV is what brought me to your thread).

I plugged them in to the data folder and gave them the names to match the portraits I was currently using, and everything looked great in-game. SO much better than the default, and they look how I envisioned them now.

Thanks!

Always glad to be of help! Have fun man, and see you around! :D
But in retrospect, trying to do JackDandy's idea of a bunch of generic one's will be difficult because as we've learned, each entry in the series sort of treats the images differently. So a portrait pack would only be relevant to whatever entry in the series I made it for... Anyway, it actually doesn't take as long to make now that I've got the hang of it, if anyone has any more requests I'm all ears!

Hi Skaiano,

I'm going to start a playthrough of Avernum V soon, and I was wondering if you could make me 3 more custom portraits for that Avernum. I have three pics already picked out.

If you don't want to, I completely understand. I'm sure you weren't expecting multiple requests from the same person. No pressure.

Haha, don't worry man I got you covered! Though, sorry for the late reply, I don't understand why I'm not getting any notifications from my forum topics eh. Anyway expect them soon man!
Hey, don't worry about the late reply. You're doing me the favor... twice.

Just for the record, though, I'm female. Women can be paladins, too. :)
