I can't kill the rat in cellar of the old house. Everything else was easy to kill including the muscle bound informer but the rat is too hard. Fist, feet, guns, knife, nothing works and I already used up the two medic kits before getting to the rat. There arent any more medic kits and I can't leave the cellar once in combat. Do I have to start over to save those two medic kits for the rat fight? Help!

Well, the rat is a sub-boss, for all intents and purposes. It is entirely avoidable and is not gonna go anywhere so you can fight it anytime you want (it is a good idea to get some levels and a decent weapon first).

And, regarding your situation… Why can't you leave the area? Try to run towards the ladder and then "use" the ladder (warning: using/checking stuff midfight requires 4 AP, AFAIK, so you may not be able to use the ladder the axact turn you have reached it. Try to survive till the new turn while standing next to it).

No, once combat is initiated you cannot leave. I tried it again with full AP's. I really hate to skip it for later as I always like to finish every area before going on and later it may not be worth coming back to . I need the money now.. Thanks for your response.
You can access that basement without meeting the rat as long as you have the light on.

Don't feel like you have to rush to win tough fights, you're very weak and vulnerable early on. (Dashing for the exit might be the best choice for some encounters, random encounters I mean)

What's your char build? I just stabbed him to death with a shiv (which luckily didn't break during the battle). I did almost die though.

Note if you have 4 AP and some food in your inventory, you can just go to inventory and heal. You can use as many food/healing items as you need once you've opened the inventory up. Do that once you're almost dead, then continue - should be easily doable if you have some meat, canned meat, fish etc.

I wouldn't use medic items this early BTW - they're kind of expensive (so lucky you ended up with two this early!), and best given to companions (since they can use them during combat automatically).

Well, My shiv broke the first time I used it, The pistol did little damage. However after several reloads I accidentely used the shovel and it worked. Killed the rat. In my inventory each food says that it cannot be used in battle.. I didn't know that the med kits could only be used once until I noticed that they were gone. Thanks for the help.

Oh yeah, forgot about the "cannot use in battle" thing - guess I probably used it after the battle was over. Congrats on killing the thing anyway - I know it kind of surprised me when I first encountered it, it's a nasty little bastard.

I wouldn't worry TOO much about using up the meds either, despite what I said - you'll end up swimming in them by the end of the game (as is usual).
