Hi there,

just noticed that the size of the installer files changend from Ver1 (6.26 GB) to Ver2 (4.21) GB.

Seems you crunched it down so that i goes onto one DVD. Would be great if you can apply this
compression to the other Big Size Installer too. Well so long as you dont have to remove content for that ;).

Thanks,

Silvanus
I just noticed that this game had a new 2.0 installer.

2 GB seems like quite a drop to be solely due to a different compression algorithm. I'll try to do some comparisons soon.

I just did a quick comparison installed the game from the old installer and the new installer the game files themselves seem about the same 7.13 GB so there appears to be no changes in the game files. I had though that perhaps they might have found a way to compress sound video differently and mod the game to do that but they haven't.

I compressed the installed game files with a couple of different compression programs for comparison. With Zip it became as 6.17 GB archive, with 7zip on Normal compression it was 4.96 GB. I then did 7zip with the Maximum compression it can do (requires more RAM and possibly more CPU resources takes longer and it came out as 4.14 GB.
With the the old installer files totaling around 6.26GB that could be consistent with them using zip compression. The new installer files are around 4.21 GB which could be consistent using a very good compression algorithm like 7zip and maximum settings to get this kind of gain over their previous compression method. This would make sense as something like 7zip takes more resources to compress, but doesn't take anywhere near those resources to extract for customers with lower end systems. My observation is it takes 10 or some times the memory to compress with the format than to extract with it.

Looks like they pulled this off with better compression algorithms, which is a nice win for us in terms of storing the files and long term for these larger games in reducing the data people pull from GOG. I note on really small games 15-20 MB installs that the installer has over head of up to 10MB or so but isn't unexpected since they have higher resolution promo art and I guess other overheads in the new installer.

Thanks for posting this! I got completely sidetracked by other stuff and forgot.
Good to know it's just a much better compression algorithm.
