OK, downloaded the game. it launches but its super laggy. I tried turning down all the video settings and such which seemed to help a little. Buts its still super laggy and unplayable.
Im on an Acer Aspire One, its plays UT GOTY really well but its not doing too well on this game. Im wondering if theres anything else i can do to run this game better?
Im getting the same thing and i know my computer has the capability.
q600 oc'd @ 3.4ghz
evga 790i ultra
evga gtx 260 core 216
etc..
Yes, this has to be for a different reason, I'm running the game on a 1GB Aspire One and it's playable on 1024x600 at highest settings (though taking them down a bit does help).
Bunch of tips, thanks to google and various other forums:
- disable bumpmapping
- disable EAX
- use 4x anti-aliasing instead of 2x (or disable anti-aliasing altogether)
Possibly try combining the above as well.
works fine on my samsung nc10 @ 1024x600 everything maxed.
Not using EAX and i have no option of setting anti-aliasing to 2x/4x i simply have a check box to select to enable it =(.
Have you tried adjusting affinity? Task manager -- disable one core from the game.
Ive tried all of the above to no avail.
I was getting a poor framerate in some areas until I changed forcegdi to 0 in the cfg_default file in the Arx Fatalis directory. I may be wrong, but I think having forcegdi set to 1 forces the CPU to perform all of the game's rendering, which can be tough in some areas for even the latest processors.
Wow, I just tried the forcegdi=0 and it HALVED my framerate!

Still no word on the bug I have with the game - random crashes in areas with 'fatal memory' error to the fore.
GoG mentioned it was a program bug, and were trying to get the original developers to look at it, but heard nothing for over a month. I now find the game unplayable as it crashes within 10-30 minutes of starting. All types of fixes and workarounds have been tried.
Its a shame, because it is an awesome game - the crashes only started after about 6-7 hours worth of gameplay, so I was well hooked on it by then. Sadly, the enjoyment is gone and the icon now mocks me from my desktop, daring me to try again in the hope that the crash wont happen THIS time.....

If you have an older computer laying around collecting dust, I highly recommend trying to install it on that. My 4 year old computer 3.2 Ghz, 2 gigs mem, XP, and a 7600GS card (AGP) plays this game *great*. 1600x1200 with *everything* maxed. Smooth. I should mention I'm playing the original purchased copy from 2002, using patch 1.18. No problems. After reading all the problems people seem to having with GOG's vers., I would try to find an old copy (cheap) and buy it (patch to 1.18, of course). This game is simply too good to be missed. 2nd time thru for me after a 7 year time off and it's still great...

Thanks for the feedback. If nothing else I may do that, but for now I'll wait and see what GoG.com does.
I am not having any problems with Arx Fatalis and I am running on a laptop with Intel integrated graphics. I have the game maxed out to my native resolution (1200 X 800 32 bit) and I have yet to experience any lag. And yes, I have the GoG version.
