I don't know what's wrong but the game or mod almost never recognize the spells except the one you draw a straight horizontal line.

Since Arx Fatalis doesn't work for me (the game crashes) using the mod is the only way to make this game playable.

If you're having difficulty drawing runes and are using Arx Libertatis 1.1.2 (the latest stable version), you can try the newest development snapshot of AL - we have added an alternative rune recognition algorithm some time ago.

To enable it, head to Options, Control Settings and tick "Alternate rune recognition" and you should be all set.

Also, we'd like to hear your feedback about the feature, so we know how it works for people.

Does it change anything regarding the original behavior?
Yes, it completely changes how individual runes are recognized - before each rune was simply a series of up/down/left/right/diagonal/... directions whereas now runes are recognized as shapes. There is however no change to how runes are combined into spells or to which spells are available.

Will have to try it thanks!

Don't know if you got any feedback on this feature, but it's a massive improvement. Runes that I simply could not draw before, are now trivial. Thanks

Sorry for bothering you on an old post but I recently bought the game and I have no idea how to apply these dev builds. Are there any instructions?

Install the game and then manually extract the files from the Arx Libertatis archive over your existing Arx Fatalis files.

More help can be found here;

Hope this helps.

Does the game load up and run OK?

It does but none of the new menu options like better rune recognition appeared.

Have you tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling (without Galaxy if you use it and in somewhere like C:\GOG Games NOT Program Files or Program Files (x86).

Then try downloading the self-installing (slightly earlier build) executable found at http://wiki.arx-libertatis.org/Download and see if that works.

Good luck.
I can't seem to get the latest snapshot version of Arx Libertatis to work.
I extracted the new .zip file over the game files.
The game doesn't even start anymore.

The game was installed on its own, without GOG Galaxy.
I also tried a different approach - installing the older AL mod.
It doesn't help with the runes though - I can't light the torch in the area after beating the goblin and falling through the pit, where the game teaches you about the runes.
The game even seems to recognize the magic strokes - they appear on the upper-right corner.
But the torch wouldn't get lit.

Then I tried installing the latest snapshot over the game - and that didn't help at all.
Then I tried installing the latest snapshot over the older AL mod, and the game still wouldn't recognize the new options.

I did a clean install with each approach.

Any help would be appreciated.

If using Arx Liberatis, disable V-sync, it's a known bug it borks magic casting.
