I recently installed the game; however, I'm not getting a main menu and thus can't do anything. According to the official FAQ, disabling the anti-virus should fix it. It didn't. I then tried reinstalling with the anti-virus disabled. Still no menu.
I'm using Avira Antivirus. I disabled the AVGuard component, which is the active scanning thing; however, avguard.exe is still in memory and the process cannot be killed. Is that's what is causing the problem?
I tried running the demo and it worked fine.
Also, antialiasing is disabled, and my GPU's not forcing anti-aliasing.
System:
Windows XP Pro
Centrino Duo 2ghz
1 gig ram
Intel 945GMA

I wish I had an answer to your problem, but, sadly, I am experiencing the same dilemma. I have a Studio laptop from Dell running Windows 7. No menu in the game...or should I say, "text". If you click around, you'll click on something invisible...invisible text. It is unfortunate. I have purchased 8 games from GoG, and only three of them work without any problems. The ones that work just fine are castles, castles II, and Praetorians.
Fallout 2 works with graphical errors. Conquest of the New World is extremely sluggish, making it unplayable. Arx Fatalis...obviously. And The Longest Journey has severe graphical errors. It was a lot of money spent on nothing.

Well, this is weird. I gave the computer a reset and it suddenly started working. I'd been playing a few games that are rather taxing on my system (STALKER, for instance. It works really well, although I was getting semi-frequent overheating issues) and I'm wondering if that made it go a bit weird.
In any case, it did start working for some reason, so I'm either going to assume that A) It just needs a restart to work. B) Avira wasn't disabling right until I restarted. or C) GPU was overheating and not displaying text.

To find out just run the game without maxing your gpu beforehand, with your antivirus still running, if the text is missing it might be your anti virus especially if it was still in the process memory.
Also you are playing stalker on a intel gma945!?
I also have Avira Antivir installed and running in the backgroung, and I play Arx Fatalis wihout problems at all. Maxed graphical options, including antialiasing.
GOG's vanilla Arx Fatalis v 1.19
Windos XP pro SP3, Athlon XP 3200+, 2GB RAM, Radeon X1950XT.

Are you video card drivers up to date? Also have you tried different shortcut compatibility options on any of the games?
"Also you are playing stalker on a intel gma945!? "
Yeah. If you drop the settings pretty low it actually runs pretty well.
Anyway, avira is still running in the background and no textual problems. Maybe the game just needs a reset after it installs. Apparently it uses some custom fonts and I'm wondering if maybe it needs a reset to properly find them. Maybe.

Do you have to run it on Direct x8?
From the JoWood FAQ:
-----------
Question 6:
-----------
The Arx Fatalis installation ran perfectly but after the game introduction, the menu background picture appears with a mouse cursor, but I can't see any menu text. What can I do?
Answer:
Delete the cfg.ini file from your Install directory and restart the game.
-----------
Question 9:
-----------
I am experiencing Menu display problems under Windows XP. What should I do?
Answer:
Be sure you haven't activated the Anti-alias Option on the Windows Desktop. To check this right click on your Windows Desktop and look in the Properties panel.
"Do you have to run it on Direct x8?"
Pretty much. Just setting it to use Static Lighting puts it in DX8 mode. Actually, if you go into the settings you can force it to use the FIRST of the dynamic lighting options. It's slow, though, and I imagine it'll cause odd artifacts later on.
I think the problem is with DirectX. The game will not work with DirectX beyond 9b.
I have to keep a separate Windows installation with DirectX 9b just to play Arx Fatalis and MDK2.

Arx Fatalis it works just fine on 9.0c. When I encountered this problem my solution was to to change my video card settings. If you have your video card's control panel set to force any type of antialiasing (and possibly some other advanced visual trickery) the font will not work. Use the advanced mode of your video card's control panel and change all antialiasing-related settings to "application controlled".
I had exactly the same issue -- bought the game on the strength of the demo (which worked fine) only to find no text on the main screen. As I have a (c)rusty old Inspiron 1300, WinXP was already set for performance (ie no font smoothing) and the GMA drivers don't let you toggle anti-aliasing. Argh! However by deleting the default config file, resetting the computer and running the exe with Win95 compatibility (visual themes & advanced text services disabled) things are back to how they should be.
I've no idea which of the above steps is key, but there you go.
