I'm at the end of my rope with this game. Crash after crash in random places with no idea why...then having to reboot my pc to retry again only to have it crash out again somewhere else. I feel I have to express my disappointment that this is such an unstable release. From what I gather its always been this way and it seems luck of the draw as to if you will actually be able to play through it or not. In short my experience sucked and I'm done with it.
All those who aren't experiencing problems count yourselves lucky!
What sort of hardware are you running??? Have you tried running the game in administrator mode??? Maybe we can work this out.
@Punctual
Did you already send question about this to support?

getting the same 'fatal memory' error all over the place - random parts of the game, random times - sometimes 30 minutes into a session, sometimes a few hours.
Have submitted my specs and stuff to support already......but for any others to look at....
Vista Home Premium 64bit
Intel core2 duo 6600 @ 2.ghz
2 gb of Ram
nVidia 8800 gts graphics card
happy to provide any other specs needed if anyone thinks they can help....;o)

I'm running it in admin mode already. As for hardware:
Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Dual core Pentium E2160 1.8 Ghz
1 Gb PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM
Integrated graphics using GMA 3100
Not the best in the graphics dept. I know but this game shouldn't have a need for anything too demanding. On board doesn't have its own dedicated RAM module and shares ram with everything else on the board but I don't think that is the issue as its compatible with DX 9. I'm not running Aero or anything else so RAM should be fine. I'm scraping bare minimum on RAM for Vista but I've turned off every auto start program thats not necessary and tweaked my services as well. I even turn off AVG antivirus when I play. I have on average about 512mb free to play with.
@ Skreczi: I haven't submitted anything to support yet I'll submit specs/problem today though.
Most times it just crashes out to desktop with no pop ups. Its only 1 out of 10 crashes that I get a fatal memory error popup. After one of those I reboot and try again. Sometimes I can play for 5 mins other times 45-1hr mins before a crash.
My problem is like Robbeasy's it seems random when its going to happen. No trigger like a certain place or action.
Thanks all.
Have you guys updated your graphics and sound drivers? Yeah, I know it's a stupid question to ask but you don't know how many problems I have resolved just by updating.
Also, try opening up the properties section of the executable of Arx Fatalis (probably Arx.exe or something). Go into the compatibilities section and set compatibility mode to WinXP SP2. That should help. Yeah I know that the GOG version is made to run on Vista/XP but you never know. I hope that helps.
Another thing would be to open up the game then alt-tab out of it and then open up Task Manager. Look for the Arx process and try setting affinity to one core/processor. A lot of problems some games have from the old days is that they were built before the days of dual/duo core processing so they have problems with that.

@Judas - all drivers up to date, I try to keep on top of stuff like that...;o)
I will try the WinXP2 compatibility fix and get back to you. Also heard of the one core / two core problem in games before, I'll give that a blast as well.
@ GoG - thanks for the prompt reply to the support email, proper customer service.
+1 for Judas for taking time out to try and help as well......

Thanks, Rob.
I just thought of another tip.
If you go into the same menu for Compatibility mode try checking the box next to "Disable visual themes". Sometimes that Windows Vista Aerial theme (or whatever the default theme is called) causes problems with games. Let me know if that helps.
Good luck dude.
I had a lot of problems when I run Arx in Vista 32. It crashed a lot.
I have dual boot with linux so I tried to emulate Arx in linux and
it worked.
Installation process was not optimal but I managed to get it work and now it is stable.
Ubuntu/Wine

Eh, I still can't get it to work at all, no idea why. Can barely get it to run using Wine/Ubuntu, but it lags so much that it's practically impossible to play it. I've got no idea of why I can't play it though, as I've had the retail version of it running a few months ago, which I borrowed from a friend. But when I borrowed it again that wouldn't work either, so I'm going to try a reformat after I've finished a couple of games first. Specifically Far Cry 2 and TWEE.
Rpply from tech support. Will give it a whirl but it may prove helpful to others:
please check if you have UAC disabled.

Also you could try switching DEP (Data Execution Prevention) to always

on, but adding ARX.exe to the list of exceptions. That could help make

the crashes less frequent.

Righty ho - done allf the above suggestions, but still getting errors. GoG did mention they think its a program bug, and are trying to get the developers to look into it, but I won't hold my breath......
I think I'll go and play Gothic instead..;o)
hi Tamaskil,

do you have any details on how to get it running under Ubuntu/Wine?

The graphics are there for me, but I cannot get any sound.
How did you configure it?

Thanks for your help.

I am unable to get this game to work either. I tired it on my XP desktop and Vista laptop, no dice. It seems to have multiple reasons to crash. Here's some of them.

Removing wide-screen resolution will reduce some of the crashes, but not all of them.
After playing a while save games will take exponentially longer to load, leaving you with a blank screen for some time.
Not all states are preserved when saving a game.
Sometimes you or the enemies will move at an incredible speed.
General random unpredictable crashes.
Looking at certain light sources causes the framerate to drop then stop and the screen to go all white, forcing you to crtl alt del out.
Not even the menu system works properly, when changing video options clicking the sliders will make the click sound but they wont do anything, this is really baffling.
Dragging items to the outer boxes of the inventory sometimes doesn't work.
When changing video options a few times the game becomes unplayable, this is probably due to a memory leak.

I think GOG.com should put up a disclaimer at least warning people, because people are wasting their money and expecting a playable release.

This game isn't even an alpha. I want my money back.

I couldn't even make it through the Arx Fatalis demo due to random crashing. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to it either. It's a shame, because I enjoyed what I did play of it and would probably get the full release if I felt more confident about the game's stability.
