That's simple enough, I think.
I assume that the GOG's version is the latest patched version, right?
Well, now, what unofficial patch should I install then?
And could you please give me a link to those patches, given that arcanum-terra is down?
Thanks!

jvolpert: Tough roadblock to hit in the first 2 hours, but it's better than hitting it at 20. :-P

Waltorious: What kind of character are you using? There are a few ways you can get past the bandits using items you find at the crash site, if you've having trouble beating them normally. I'm pretty sure that somewhere at the crash site there's an explosive grenade, which is actually quite powerful. If you can hit the bandits with that when they're all standing fairly close together, it will go a long way towards killing them. Also, grenades don't hurt you or your allies for some reason, so you can walk right up to the bandits and throw it in their faces, which has a decent chance of working even if you have no throwing skill.

If your character knows how to prowl, you can try to pickpocket the key from the lead bandit too.

I managed to kill them in melee after a few tries... if you can separate the three bandits and take them one at a time it's a little easier.

Anyway, the UAP is highly recommended so you should probably restart anyway, but when you get to the bandits again those are some other things you can try.
Thanks for the tips. I did find the grenades, but sold them. Spent my money on armor. I'm playing a half-elf fighter w/ a little bit of magic. I went with a healing spell to start first time, but considering Virgil appears to be a healer I'm thinking of going with some kind of defensive or buffing spell tree instead.

This time, I'll keep the grenades and stick a point into charisma so I can hopefully recruit the ogre and see if I can beat the bandits. Failing that, I'll make sure I keep 1000g available so I can always fall back on the cowardly route.

Remember that you can also work for the bandits to get them to let you pass. You said that they wouldn't negotiate with you because you'd already talked to the constable... I don't remember that happening for me, but if it's true, then you would want to avoid talking to the Constable or at least keep a saved game from before you talked to him in case you want to take that route. Of course, you'd also need to be OK with performing a "questionable" act (i.e. you'll probably take a reputation hit).

Thanks for the assistance. Yeah, when you try to talk to them about any other way to avoid the fee, he says "there would be if I didn't know you were already working for the constable" or something to that effect.

To follow up on my original question, the UAP update detects that you have the Hi-Res patch and tells you to uninstall it first. Luckily, that's a very easy process which you can do just by running the installer again. Uninstalling Hi-Res, installing UAP, then reinstalling Hi-Res took a total of about 2 minutes.

Thanks again for the help!
Hmm... .

After installing the unofficial patch, the hq townmaps and the high-res patch, Arcanum now crashes when I try to go to an underground map. Anyone have any idea?
Does anyone know where else I can download the High Quality Town Maps and High Quality Music patches? I cannot get the terra-arcanum links to work at all. I just get a server error.

(And yes, I'm trying to download them properly :)

It's around 112 Mb in size.

In case of problems with Terra Arcanum, other download locations are listed here.

Post your specs (OS, Graphics cards etc.), what mods you've installed, what error if any you're getting and what do you mean when you say it does not run for you.

Applemilk: I bought the game today, and followed this guide as much as possible, but two things didn't work. The whole doublebuffer thing won't work, it says it's "Not valid. Make sure the file name is correct."
avatar
hofmannfamily: It sould be outside the quote marks, ie "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Arcanum\Arcanum.exe" -no3d -doublebuffer

avatar
Applemilk: And also the High Res patch won't install. Is that because of that? Help!
avatar
hofmannfamily: That's weird - make sure you're in admin mode...etc...and the UAC nonsense people mention above.
in windows 8 this doesn't work, it says its not valid, I'm assuming this is meant to be added in the box next to target under the "shortcut tab" as I cant find any where else under the properties tab to change stuff
How do you give inventory items to followers? I want to give items from the crash site to Virgil but can't see how to do it.

Guillem: How do you give inventory items to followers? I want to give items from the crash site to Virgil but can't see how to do it.
1) Right click on their portrait and select Inventory.

2) Drag items from the right side of the screen (yours) to the left side (theirs).

3) If they are willing to use an item, it will autoequip.

To see what they have equipped (and to take it away if you want or need to) click the little human figure to the top left above their box, right below the big circle.

Followers generally decide one item is better than another if it's worth more gold. Doesn't matter if it's cursed, or too magic/tech for them; overall, if they can use it, they'll equip it. So if you're using a follower as a pack mule, only let him hold wrong-size armor, or give him a gun OR bullets (or a bow OR arrows) but not both at the same time.
Could someone list a mirror for terra-arcanum.com? That site isn't loading at all and it seems all the patches are from that one site only.

I have the most important stuff on my OneDrive account. DO post here if you have problems downloading them or if any are corrupt.
