That's simple enough, I think.
I assume that the GOG's version is the latest patched version, right?
Well, now, what unofficial patch should I install then?
And could you please give me a link to those patches, given that arcanum-terra is down?
Thanks!

CFrederick: I also recommend the patch that increases level cap to 127 (just google it). This is because if you do all the quests you will hit level 50 pretty early (I hit it when I visited the elf city) and because there are so many differnet skills that are fun to try. (I was level 60 by the end and the last few battles were still a challenge).
Level cap increase is a matter of personal preference. I like the level cap personally, because it forces you to choose strengths and weaknesses for your character, and you'll never be able to do everything. But, it is common to reach 50 before the end of the game, which could cause it to get boring for some players.

I rather enjoy the challenge of picking skills on a limited budget, although I might be interested in doing that with another character to become master of everything (although I'm not sure that I need to - it may be possible to use a properly-generated character with some potions, the right items, and well-timed use of the various blessings to do so in 50 levels - this character isn't crafted for it but I think I can get pretty close already).

My character hardly fights at all, as I'm sitting on a bunch of skill points and have pretty much only advanced thief skills for maximum exploring fun. I find that schematics + manuals give me all the tech I need (either better than or nearly as good as the best I could do with crafting . . . since I have allies up to level 4 [auto pick, Pyro Axes, Charged Rings, heal and fatigue restorers]), saving a LOT of points by not buying any tech skill. I just gear up my party and let them fight, although I suspect it might eventually get challenging. You're right about fast leveling though - I've started trying to advance the story and get fun toys with a minimum XP gain until I can pick up all the allies I want for my final party before I pass their level (losing max levels for them) . . . again, a fun challenge though.

Still, a question: is there a functional or stability difference between the level cap remover and the "up to 127" patches? Terra Arcanum has both but little info. Actually only the former specifically has a note saying it works with Drog's UAP . . .

I'm almost certain that when I played, if I reached level 50 before my followers did, they would still gain levels at the point where I WOULD have gained a level, if I still could. The experience bars still filled up at level 50, but when I reached a new "level" nothing would happen to my character, but my followers would level up (until they reached 50). It's possible that this behavior was added in the unofficial patch though; I've never played without it.
I'm having problems with the up to level 127 patch. After I install the patch it starts asking for a disc, giving me the message "no disc inserted" when I try to play.

OH!

huh. I'll test this.

I was planning on trying to level some crafters to 50 until I realized that they only learn tech up to level 4 [makes sense, else there's no need to invest yourself], so I've settled for electro armor instead of mech. plate and given up on getting a tesla cannon, with the benefit that I can drop them off and fill up on story characters for longer (and not have to worry about bringing a level 30 story char into the endgame . . .). With this in mind I could actually try level farming everyone . . . hrm.

Thanks!

Huh, that may be why terra-arcanum hides it (just realized that if I allow scripts, the collapsible menus lack some of the items that show in the noscript view . . . must be deprecated).

Thanks!

That's because it comes with (hacked?) arcanum.exe. Hopefully you read the readme and backed up your original exe otherwise you'll need to reinstall ((re)installing UAP might work as well). It's NOT compatible with UAP or GOG version anyway so use the Arcanum universal level cap remover v0.0.1 instead. Read the readme this time.

Applemilk: And also the High Res patch won't install. Is that because of that? Help!
I take it you right-clicked the link to save as, you need to physically click the download link to actually THEN download the right file. This should fix your problem ;)

mawy: Actually, it seems you just have to wait a little while between downloads. I tried waiting and reloading the downloads page and I was able to download the Hi-Res patch, etc. Or maybe it's because I didn't open the downloads in a new tab that time, haha.
At Terra-Arcanum, you can only download one item at a time. If you click on a second link while downloading, it will start after the first has finished.
I followed the guide and was just wondering the opinion of you guys on what resolution to run Arcanum on. My monitor is 1680x1050 native, and I tried that and it was a bit too small UI then I tried 1024x768 and it didn't fit the screen all the way. Is there a happy medium or resolutions I should try?
Some folks were discussing screen resolutions in:
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura/high_resolution_patch_1

Think the best thing to do is set your scaling up then try different resolutions until you find a good result.

1280x800 or 1440x900 any 16:10 resolution should be ok. I use 1280x800.
Quick question. I installed the Hi Res & Town Map patches before noticing the UAP. Can I just install UAP now? If not, can I install UAP, then reinstall the Hi-Res & Town Map patches? Or should I simply do a completely new clean install and start with UAP first?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure that you can just install the UAP now, without having to uninstall the graphical mods first. If this causes any problems, then you should probably uninstall the graphical mods, install the UAP first, then intsall the graphical mods again and that should work.

One warning... I have heard that UAP savegames are not compatible with the un-patched game, so you may need to start over if you are installing the UAP. But it's worth it, as it really improves the game a lot.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot this evening. Yeah, I realize my save won't be compatible, but that's OK I think I need to restart anyway.

I've backed myself into a rather dead-end scenario in Shrouded Hills I think. I don't seem to have any hope of killing the bandits at the bridge and am unable to recruit the ogre in the bar (not sure he'd help anyway, they seem WAY more powerful than me). I already talked to the constable so the bandits won't negotiate with me, and I've spent too much money and don't have the 1000 gold to bribe them. It seems I have no hope of advancement.

Tough roadblock to hit in the first 2 hours, but it's better than hitting it at 20. :-P

What kind of character are you using? There are a few ways you can get past the bandits using items you find at the crash site, if you've having trouble beating them normally. I'm pretty sure that somewhere at the crash site there's an explosive grenade, which is actually quite powerful. If you can hit the bandits with that when they're all standing fairly close together, it will go a long way towards killing them. Also, grenades don't hurt you or your allies for some reason, so you can walk right up to the bandits and throw it in their faces, which has a decent chance of working even if you have no throwing skill.

If your character knows how to prowl, you can try to pickpocket the key from the lead bandit too.

I managed to kill them in melee after a few tries... if you can separate the three bandits and take them one at a time it's a little easier.

Anyway, the UAP is highly recommended so you should probably restart anyway, but when you get to the bandits again those are some other things you can try.
