Playing as a mage, it seems a lot of tech and alchemy items, herbs, etc. are with out personal use and just clutter the inventory.
Are they really safe to sell (as far anyone even buys coal or broken pistols), or should some of them be better hoarded for later use?

As far as i understand, even tech NPCs do not match well, as magic does not affect them properly. Is that true, or doesn't it really matter?

If a NPC has a technical bias, they'll begin to resist your spells, but that's only a problem for healing, and there are other ways to heal tech characters.

As a mage you should prioritize neutral fighters (like Sogg Mead Mudd and other half-ogres), and magic-aligned hybrids (like Virgil) they're the most effective bang for your buck.
Don't use NPC mages like Geoffrey since the AI sucks at building and using them.

As for items you can safely sell most of the tech ones since they're no use to you and neutral NPCs won't be able to get much use out of them usually.

If you really want to use tech NPCs (Magnus being the main example) then you could keep some of the stuff he'd use, but they're plentiful and you don't need to hold onto them.
However, if I were you I'd make regular stops at a regular and safe drop point. I usually use Joachim's room at the inn in Shrouded Hills. The shops there buy anything, so it's a frequent stop for me on low Haggle characters.
My reasoning is roughly thus:
Not all tech-savvy NPCs are available early on. Sebastian, for example, will be available only after a significant amount of play, and what he can build is rather handy.
Likewise, with enough tech manuals (Tarant) there are some very helpful or at least amusing schematics out there. Granted these are hardly requirements, but I was even able to craft Boswyck's Gun by buying a few tech manuals.
Yes, I know, it's a crappy gun, but it's fun. And we're here to have fun.

There are some things that you can find, especially at the beginning of the game (a broken camera, eye-in hexagon amulet, matchbook, passport) which can be important for quests much later.

There is really a lot of "junk" though, especially if you are a magic user, or even if you are a tech user and don't specifically need something.
Yes, thank you! It seems those objects are very obvious, so everything that does not stand out can be sold or disposed.
