So I recently started the game and I read everywhere that gunslinger is very hard for first-timers, so I created an elven mage. But I was unhappy with her, so I abandoned her at level 6 and created my gunslinger cause I knew that would be the charecter I enjoy. I was afraid that it might be very hard at the beginning. Now I don't know what is considered the beginning, but now I'm level 8 and already I am much more stronger than any enemy I encounter. Also, I reached a point where I'm never short on bullets or healing salves any more.
I think if you know what you're doing, gunslinger is not hard at all, and definitely more enjoyable than a standard mage or fighter class. So here is what I did:

I created a female human with "raised by monks" background. I put one of the initial char points on herbology, 2 on marksmanship, 1 on dex t raise it to 10 and the last one on charisma to be able to recruit the half-orc guy. In the beginning I left the fights for my followers. I used the first few char points to unlock fine revolver, and I made huge profits on selling them, since the revolver parts cost 4 and I can sell back a revolver for 100-200. Hand-crafted flintocks sell for nice profits too.
I solved the bridge encounter with the grenades I found in the cave near to the crash site.
For the next few char points, I unlocked molotov cocktail and raised my perception to 12 so I'll be able to learn level3 marksmanship. That's where I'm now.

I bought the bullets schematic in Tarant, and also bought tons of fuel to create 10+ molotovs. I was able to kill the bulk of the undead in a certain cellar beneath a trapdoor with ease. My companions tank very well, and I can kill a zombie within a turn with my trusty fine revolver. Now I'm out of healing agents, so I plan to go into the wilderness for some herbs. I also plan to visit the merchants and see if they have any chartpelter for sale.
As I said, I'm level 8 now and I can easily see myself advancing to lvl12 by solving the side quests available at this point. I think the gunslinger is not too hard (at least, not until this point) and I definitely enjoy it more than I enjoyed my mage.
If you have good followers then the game isn't very hard with any character. The difficulty of magic vs. tech characters refers mostly to the situation where you're playing alone. It's doable and I've done but tech-gunslinger is definitely trickier than playing a mage.

Don't worry if you're finding the game easy at level 8 though, it gets harder... and as leveling slows down you'll probably be wishing you put those gunsmithy points into something else.
I find that with a lot of games, even while the mechanics may favour one character build over another, very often the sheer enjoyment players get from playing the way they want to play, can make a less optimal character outperform the widely accepted strong character. At least for that player.

i agree. this is the last game that should be ruined by worrying about the best way to do things. best played with the imagination and not a walkthrough
I think people oversell the difficulty of playing a gunslinger. It's not so much that gunslingers are bad, it's more that mages are too good, so gunslingers are bad in comparison. Taken alone gunslingers are fine and, as you said, definitely more fun than playing a standard mage build. (Though playing a mage that avoided the more obvious spells and went more for elemental spells or debuffs or something might be more fun than a normal mage as well.)

I haven't completed my Gunslinger playthrough yet, but I left off at about lv. 20-25 and hadn't had any major difficulty (but then, I also hadn't gone to the mines yet. >.>).

To go through the first mine you need a decent melee oriented team mates - dog is a preferred option, Magnus or half-ogre from shrouded hills should equip gloves to fight stone golems/seeth masses and Virgil should just act as a support attacker/healer with some decent staff.

The black clan mines weren't so hard, My 2 companions (magnus and sodd) tanked very well, and molotov cocktails helped a lot. The only annoyance was that I ran out of virtually everything (bullets/healing agents/molotov cocktails) once, so I had to backtrack to Tarant.

Now I'm 26, just got back from the isle of despair, and the game is still prety easy, but very good

I would definitely agree that that is the hardest part of the BMC Mines: the amount of stuff you will go through getting all the way through the mines. There are a lot of levels, and a lot of enemies to fight. And if you aren't prepared (meaning you've played the game before) you probably will have to backtrack at some point to get more bullets, or healing potions/salves, or repair armor, or whatever.

And I think that is where a lot of the frustration about the mines comes from, because if you aren't really really powerful by the time you go to the mines (which you probably won't be for a first time player) then you need to backtrack a lot and the game becomes much more difficult that it was previously - and then goes back to not being too difficult (because you don't have the long haul through a place without any ability to stop and restock on things).

i did it with no companions but Sogg the half-ogre, and he didnt even fight, he was just there to carry my 5000 extra rounds and molotovs and the disassembled boobytrap parts
