I tried searching for an answer to this but to no avail :(

I am using Virgil's Debug right now but it isn't exactly what I want to do. I just want Expert Haggle, I don't want the Wis associated with it cause it feels more like cheating raising stats like that. So I downloaded this game editor but its worthless to me because no program recognizes it. I've tried looking for an "8 file" opener but there doesn't seem to be any info on this.

Every post I read said they "ran the program" so I changed it to an .exe but that doesn't work. Seeing as no one posted this before I'm sure this is a stupid fix but I just can't seem to get it.
Ty in advance if you can help me out!
Hello,

What Operating System are you using?

I am using wine under linux, but on Windows it should be easier.
You have a file called "Arcanum Edit.exe". If your OS is not showing the ".exe"-part, you don't need to change it.
The errors are likely dll-errors. For me I had to download a "Msvbvm60.dll" and put it in the same folder as the editor.
That got rid of the first error message. The other dll "MSSTDFMT.DLL", that comes with the download, needs to be put in the "C:\windows\system"-folder (not system32) and activated by running "Regsvr32 C:\windows\system\msstdfmt.dll" in the CMD.
These steps are described in the Readme, that comes with the download (*VII* FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS *VII*).
If you have gotten other error messages, please post them.

Greetings,

Hi thanks for the quick response! Ha didnt think I would get one for months... I am using Windows 10.

The problem I am having is that when I download it its File Type is "8 file" and I have no idea what exactly that is (*Windows 8 ?). Ive tried several download sources and they all give the same file. I havent even gotten to the .dll parts yet :P
Never heard of that file-type, seems weird. But I have not used Windows in years.
Found nothing on the "8 file", except x86-Assembler code or some weird stuff like that.

The downloaded file should be a zip file called "arceditor1_8.zip". And when you unpack that there should be some files (Readme.txt, .ocx, .dll, .exe).
Have you managed to unpack the .zip-File?
Is the "8 file" the downloaded file (instead of "arceditor1_8.zip") or the exectutable (instead of "Arcanum Edit.exe")?

I had an idea, what the problem might be.
If the file is named something like "Arcedit1.8.zip" , Windows might for some bloody reason delete the .zip-part and you are left with a "Arcedit1.8". In that case just unpack with winrar, or 7zip. Then you can continue.

(Mime-types FTW)

You sir, are a god damned genius :P Ty so much this was exactly the problem.
I would also like to tell anyone running Windows 10 to not install in C:\Windows\System32

The correct place to register the files is in C:\Windows\SysWOW64
