MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD

You're right about the camera. When given the choice early on to trade either it or the boot, go with the boot. (Then you can buy that back right away, really cheap; there's a place that'll pay you much more for it in Tarant.)
Endarire is right: you'll need a shovel, but not until near the end of the game.
You only need one Kathorn crystal, but only if you're not persuasive enough to get the ready-made item, and are forced to either make it yourself or pay to have it made.
Many of the schematics you find (rather than buy) are one of a kind, so if you intend to build them, learn them yourself rather than selling them.
The opportunity will present itself to acquire a one-of-a-kind axe. If you are Dwarven, or have one in your party, it's an awesome melee weapon. Not so much for other races, though. Especially not Elves.
If you go for Throwing mastery, the object of the fetch quest is actually the best throwing weapon in the game. It's worth it to pickpocket it back; burn a Fate point if you have to.
There's a stone-like object you will come across, if you explore a hidden cave under a certain lair. It will do you well in the end game, to help recruit its former owner.
After you complete the quest involving a fake pelt, you have a random chance to acquire the real pelt. If you do, the same person that was interested in the boot will be very interested in acquiring that, as well.
There's a convoluted side quest involving lost Dwarven technology. To complete it, you need to earn the trust of someone as part of the main quest. One of the items he then gives you is the final component for solving the side quest.
If you are going to do the Gods' Quest, be sure to have: two rings (copper will do), two rubies (uncut will do), two M'nura coins, two lava rocks, two heartstones (three, if you're doing the Dwarven quest mentioned above), one Li'tani, one passion root, one olive branch, one black diamond, and one bone-handled weapon. For this one, I strongly urge you to follow a walkthrough; any mistake means you need to start over, and possibly have to hunt down more components. (This is especially problematic with heartstones, since they are all in one place and there are only five of them available.)
There's probably more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head right now.
