Whoever found that above link, you da man! I lost all my old patches when my HD melted and was having trouble with all the discontinued links.

Okay wait, the patches aren't downloading. I get a thing about "download will start after this advertisement" and then nothing,

Oh cut me some slack, the last post in here is a month ago. I'm sorry for being so hasty, my apologies.

Hi all,

I just got the game and run Windows 8. I played the game some years ago, and would like to breeze thru it this time around. Do any character editors work in Win 8?

madglee: THIS FIXED IT: Also right click the arcanum shortcut, select properties and add "-no3d -doublebuffer" to the end without " ". (should look something like this C:\games\GOG.com\Arcanum\Arcanum.exe -no3d -doublebuffer)
Thanks for the help. This fixed it for me as well. Game runs fine. Now to read the manual and see what kind of character I want to make.
The lack of interest from modders community for Arcanum is so immense sadly. The game is so great, and yet one of the most buggiest / unbalanced one in the genre.

Why still there is no mod to fix summons' kill xp to share with the player itself after all these years ? This is only one example among many which I can remember at the moment, I mean it, its so mandatory to ignore :(
New account member. Found this whole website because I just reacquired a disc copy of Arcanum and was curious if anyone ever made mods for it. Wild. I had a lot of problems with some of the mod links and patch installations but it seems the forums here already had every issue addressed successfully. Well played. I'm looking forward to trying out and old favorite with a shiny new spin.
Is there any mod/patch rebalancing firearms? You know, gunslingers suck in this game.

edit: found it in next topic.

Thanks for posting the links to the patches I'm really enjoying playing this game at 1920x1080 on my laptop. I do have one problem though. I can only scroll down on the world map no matter where I click on the widget it only scrolls down. Is this a problem with the patch or is my resolution too high?
So I'm installing the patch and get the CMD window and all, I press [I] for installation and it fails saying:

Error: error loading [Arcanum.exe]

.
.
.

Error: Unix.Unix_error<20, "stat", "arcanum.exe>

I have win7 64bit.
the game is from GOG
I installed the GOG version of the game on my laptop. I have been playing it for a while but the game keeps slowing down and I have to save and restart for it to work properly again. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix? Will I have to restart my game if there is a patch?

My system:
AMD A6-4400M
Memory: 6 GB
64 bit OS - Windows 8

I'm not sure I understood the specifics of your issue, but if you're playing the game in it's basic form, out-of-the-box (I hate the "vanilla" definition, but if it makes you understand it better, then, yes, if you're playing the "vanilla" Arcanum), bear in mind it's a Troika game and, therefore, quite buggy. Still pretty stable, for the Troika standard, but far from being glitch- and issue-free.

Though it may have something to do with Windows 8 (it's not exactly the friendliest OS when it comes to gaming, even more so when we're talking older games), in which case I'm not the person to help you, try installing the universal fan patch, which makes the game playable and addresses most of the problems it has. You can download the latest version from this link.

If you're into modding your games with other mods aside from the fixing ones, be sure to read the OP, as it provides some other mods that are considered "essential", if you're into that sort of thing.
I was under the impression that GOG games came patched and updated to run on new OS. You are saying I need to patch it. What are the required patches and will it mean I have to restart the game?

GOG games do come patched and are optimized to run on modern OSes. Still, rarely, you come across one like Arcanum, which was already very glitchy to begin with, and there's not much GOG can do, using only the official fixes and patches, to make it glitch-free.

The first post in this thread gives you detailed explanations on the essential mods and how to use them, in case you're interested.

I'm not a mod fan, myself, so the only one I installed was the one I linked you in my previous post (you can find it in the first post of the thread, as well), in order to make my copy of Arcanum more playable. If you choose to install that patch -- and you should --, there's no need to install the game again, though it's likely you'll have to start it all over, as unpatched Arcanum save games tend to be incompatible with the patched game.

As for "required" patches, that's about it. Other ones increase resolution, add in-game content, etc, but the only one you really *need* is the universal patch.
With Arcanum Factory, you can now create new items and make them available in Arcanum or WorldEd, it is very complete and allows you to create new art as well:

Arcanum Factory 1.2

Also if you ever wanted to open up the Arcanum in WorldEd and realized you can't, then you may want to use this little tool:
