Greetings again all, I've been enjoying Arcanum since getting into it again and have found everyone in this forum very supportive so I thought it would be okay to ask a pretty basic question, which I'll ask humorously to keep things fun: How can I get me some coin?

Seriously though, I find myself pretty low on money, even though I gather armor from enemies I kill and sell it back, do pretty much every quest I am offered (whether good or evil) and when I was really desperate I killed a somewhat wealthy person out in the slight-wilderness which upset one of my party-members who was good-leaning, which I normally am (I'm in the 40s of alignment) but I really needed some scratch. Oh, I can pickpocket too but I'm not super-great at it, and I don't want to waste hours picking out bits of coin from pockets. So in summary, how's a human get some coin around here without resorting to murder all the time?

Where are you in the game and what type of character do you play? Also, are you (1) trying to invest in real estate or (2) working on your education?

General advice:
1. Don't upgrade your equipment at shops. Buy boots of speed, +50 mana staves and maybe dread armour (this is general advice: since you have a lack of money right now, wait until you find a set) and quest items.
2. Walk or teleport around. Teleport is obtainable at around level 20.
3. Watch for containers! Check every suspicious object!
4. Consider investing in Gambling if you have the (edit: sorry, derp) intelligence and points to spare.

Also: I have a log of saves from yet another talky mage playthrough. Here's how I fare:
Level - Situation - Monies
1 Crashed, wearing a jacket, boots, with a fine steel dagger, a set of lockpicks and 72 bucks in cash on hand.
3 Arrived at SH 313
6 Arrived at Tarant 2000+
Proceeded to run around Tarant questing, no thievery quests, no casual thievery (note: forgot to steal the ring via FP), paid the library fee
10 Just got info on GB 4000+
(I will then proceed to kill the info givers and sell loot. 4000+ is with them yet unkilled.)
Still running around Tarant, made a trip to the ruins on foot, bought DA for Virgil
12 Made it to Black Root 6000+
note: I have been to Bellerogrim's but forgot to loot the place *facepalm*
14 Just arrived at Ashbury after BR and Dernholm 6500
Proceeded to clean up Ashbury (except the fire room, I couldn't open the door and would have got fried if I could anyway, and castle) and the two TK dungeons
17 Finally arrived at the BMC mines 7000+
Took one step into the mines -EEUCH- recalled how I hate the damn place and went to Ashbury castle, the shipwreck and Tarant sewers to level to 20 so that I can brave the mines with TK in tow; going by ship or on foot at that point since one of my NPCs is not allowed on trains.
20 Going into the mines, finally, with 11800 on hand.
Here's what we wear (non-mundane stuff only):
Me: elven chain, boots, 50 mana staff, cursed helmet from Ashbury (drop). I also have a red diplomatic suit and elven boots on hand.
TK: DA, boots, sword of air.
Virgil: DA, boots, 50 mana staff, geleam's helmet.
SMM: leather armour (drop), katana.
GTA: DA, boots, 40 mana staff (probably a drop or a quest reward - the point is I didn't pay for it).

In the mines I learn Teleport, which means I won't need to pay for mundane transportation.

After that, life proceeds as usual. I just made 32 completing my first quest in Caladon which laced my wallet with an additional 11000 for a grand total of 45000+. I didn't use moneymaking skills (Haggle, Gamble - I went to collect the blessing immediately before Caladon and the blessing-induced levels never have been put to use, with the notable exception of Kerlin's Persuasion which raised me to Master) and I only picked one pocket (and that with a Fate Point).

Final note: sell the scrolls you won't need (aka everything except Rez and Shrink)! Scrolls are priced according to spell level, so don't ever dare to waste an identify (which sells for ~2500) on identifying an item (which can be done at a gypsy for 100)!
Also: there will be a trap-filled place with quite a number of detect trap scrolls available. Don't waste them on traps! Leave the party waiting, Virgil within spell reach, undress and play minesweeper in god mode. Whoa, monies!

I'm a tech-guy. I use firearms, herbs, and enjoy the art of persuasion. Real Estate sounds interesting so do tell more, and I'm always looking to be as educated as possible. Mainly I just want to be well-equipped and not dirt-poor.

I actually meant the opposite - that it's weird to run into money difficulties unless you're buying tech manuals or saving for the mansion.

Since you have Persuasion, you're going to have a trail of followers, which means you won't have to upgrade equipment to win fights - just buy the best when there's enough money, follower by follower. Really, since you can't directly control NPCs and the different combat options are supposedly balanced with player in mind, the best fighters are those who use the least tactically-challenged method, aka melee. Katanas are sold in Ashbury for 400, and then there are balanced swords, the techie equivalent of harm for the whole party (Mr. Douche is too dumb to cast harm in combat but a balanced sword is something everyone can appreciate).

Do side quests when you have arrived in a town, explore side locations. Since there are no time limits on anything and transportation costs an arm and a leg if you're charismatic, consider walking.

Don't fight armor-crushers directly! Either deal with them at a distance or run in circles with a follower (usually Dog) behind you and Virgil standing close enough to heal the follower but far enough to not join the fun.

Oh and sorry, I derped, will now edit post - Gambling is based on IN, which you probably have at a reasonable level to consider putting some points in the skill right away (not everything is potion cheese after all ;-) ).

HUGE EDIT: to quickly earn money, enter a new bar, save and talk to a random citizen. If they bet you 500, agree to play and collect 500 (the full list of answers is floating around the internet). If they do anything else, reload and try again.

You and certain followers can learn to make certain items for fun and profit. ;) Admittedly firearms can be a slightly pricier way to go. Find yourself a manhole in Tarant---with a little caution, you can find some coin and experience early on. If you take a bed at the inn for a week, you can explore the sewers and a certain jeweler's shop without burning expensive healing potions. Just go rest when you get pretty beaten up. I ended the game at Level 42 with over 100K gold. With a melee-focused party (Gar, Dog, Magnus, Loghaire, Virgil, Chukka) I found I ran out of stuff I really needed to buy well before the end of the game.
All very helpful advice. I suppose I'm just not the best at spending money, but I"ll work at saving.

Firearms will drain your money pretty quickly because you need to buy bullets a lot. This will get easier when you get some better guns... some guns guzzle a lot of ammo whereas others can inflict a lot of damage with less ammo.

Otherwise, everyone else's advice is good. Try to avoid buying stuff in shops if you can find / make it instead.

This is why, when I chose to go Tech this time through, I went with a different discipline. I'm a backstabbing thief doing the grenade discipline, with a background of Arson or Pyromania (or something like that)...it gives a big bonus to grenades. I've got a buffed boomerang of some kind, too. No ammo needed on any of this stuff.

Good times!
