When I launch the game (right clicking and selecting run as administrator) the game screen goes black, and I can hear sound but no videos play. Then I see the loading image ("Arcanum is loading" or whatever), and then the screen goes black. I can sometimes get things around the mouse to display in a box, but everything else is black. I can click stuff and it works, but I can only see in a little box around the cursor.

I have tried running in different compatibility modes to no success. Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks!

Try installing unofficial patches. Follow this thread

EDIT: Working downloads and instruction here

Thanks for the advice. I tried installing the main unofficial patch. No luck. Patch installation went through fine, but the game still does the exact same thing.

I have also tried reinstalling the game and running the installer in administrator mode. Also updated nVidia drivers. Nothing is working or changing anything. I'm out of ideas. Put in a support request with gog, we will see if that yields anything

Two more ways to solve the problem. RMB on the shortcut and add two options there. It should look like:

(instalation path)...Arcanum\Arcanum.exe" -doublebuffer -no3d

If it doesn't change anything go to Arcanum folder and delete arcanum.cfg file. Check the game. If it's not running delete sierraup.cfg as well.

I already tried the no3d doublebuffer trick, no success with that. I will try deleting those files and see what happens

Alright. Tried both of those fixes (deleting the files) and no success. Still the exact same problem is occurring. Any other ideas?

How about updating your video card drivers? Did you try that?

And btw could you give me more information about your computer? Processor, RAM, video card and system should be enough

EDIT: wait a second: Did you install ONLY the main patch? Try installing all of them in order, hi-res pack seems to be the most important here (you can skip the last one)

I did only install the main patch. I will try installing them in order, though I am having difficulties getting the website to pop up correctly.

Yes, I updated my video drivers. That did not help either.

Specs: Processor is an Intel I7-3610QM at 2.3 Ghz; 16GB RAM; GeForce 675M; Windows 7 64-bit

I've got a solution for you. I am assuming you have an integrated graphics chip on your laptop. Just run the game with that. Many users complained of the same problems as I have experienced and is easily fixed by running it on that chip. I don't know why it does this, but the game was made before laptops of this nature.

Holy crap. That fixed it. I considered that at one point but I was concerned the integrated chip would be too cruddy to run the game. But I guess I didn't consider either how old the game is and how much time has passed. Thanks a lot for the help!!!

Perfect solution! I would never have thought of that. It's good that furrhjb can finally play this magnificent game
Well, that's one awesome solution. Thanks !

What does this even mean? How do you do that? I have a desktop PC where the monitor and CPU are encased in the same unit (like the new iMacs but it's a Dell). Please be as explicit and in depth as possible with this answer because I don't have any expertise in computing.
