I ask this as I really do not like turn based combat systems although I quite like Fallout 2's turn based system strangely enough. Also can you dual wield swords and guns in this as I love that feature in games. Although their does not seem to be many games that support that. I really am thinking about buying this game but is it really free roaming and allow you to make nearly any decisions you like on quests?

! would say no, it's not like Titan Quest's real-time combat system. It's much more hectic, to the point where I recommend that everyone just play in turn-based mode to save themselves the strain, to say nothing of taking full advantage of their agility stat.

You cannot dual-wield anything. Particularly not a melee and a ranged weapon.

I don't know of any game that allows you to make "nearly any" decisions on quests, but Arcanum allows you a lot more freedom than most games, and it's almost as free-roaming as they come.

You've got a huge landmass to explore from the get-go. The main plot puts a few limits on where you're allowed to go initially, but once you've "discovered" a new land, you're free to return to old stomping grounds anytime you like. The entire continent of Arcanum (plus or minus some islands) will be open to you by the end of the game.

I may be in the minority here but i actually quite like the real time combat in Arcanum... for me its much more fun! okay it could be argued that you don't have the time to react like you do in turn based but my take on it is its meant to be an adventure, things will jump out and suprise you, and if you're not quick enough they'll happily chew/shoot/stab/poke you until you're a bloody mess on the ground.

The game itself is phenomenal, I've finihsed the game many times with real time combat and a few with turn based. With just about every type of character you can think of (within reason, there are thousands of combinations in arcanum and not enough hours in the day) and all id say is go for it, Get stuck in! :D

Only things that really need mentioning so you don;t get whaled is save often, dont be stingy with potion/salve supplies and remember the quickbar is your friend :)

Both modes of combat have their merit, depending on the situation. An almost impossible fight against difficult enemies could call for turn-based combat, allowing the chance for careful planning and execution.

Then there's situations that could call for real-time combat. Possible scenarios include really easy encounters that you just want to finish as quickly as possible, like killing a few rats or trying to smash a locked barrel. Another possibility is when your party is heavily wounded, trying to rest just outside Tarant for free - resulting in a random encounter where you flee through town as a horde of yeti charge after you, killing anything that stands in their way!

I'm in agreement with DrWevil on this. Real-time is definitely more chaotic, but very rewarding if you're willing to work with it. The scenario with the yeti was only possible with a mod, but it is one of the most memorable battles I've had in my years of Arcanum.

Anyway, Arcanum has a lot to offer in terms of free-roaming. It really just boils down to how you like to play.

Thank you for replying everyone I got so excited about this game I bought it last night about 8pm Eastern Australian time. It's almost finished downloading so I can't wait to install it and give it a go. Sounds like a very strategic rpg game.
Although I really wanted to test out some characters that I have written about that are from a historical gothic novel series I am working on at the moment in which the story setting begins in 1607.
So it is only 150 years or so from the era of steam. The reason I asked about dual wield is because both my characters from my books are female and both use dual katana's or dual swords. But that's okay I can make do without it

To go for the combat mode press R, And to switch to real/turn mode just press SPACEbar! but be carefull doing that! a tip if u want real mode is very fast, best for good melee heros with good strength and good dexterity. Its very cool with guns or bows man. If you have a lot of enymies and a mage rather use turn by turn mode to have time to choose your magic and aim targets. You can also put magic on litlte cases to fast choosing like heal or fire balls ;)
Some things you can do just on real time combat like breaking windows, doors and cheasts. Take an axe and go to combat and press ALT key and clic target!
cya ;)
Thanks for the help too Adroid.
I'm using Real time mode at the moment and has worked out really well for my character because she has very high strength and dexterity.
I will most likely have to use turn based combat for the other character I want to make as it will be a purely charisma based character with very low strength. The character is very anti war and anti combative. She prefers diplomacy over violence. Where my other character is in fact her non identical twin sister that despises her and slashes and shoots first then asks questions later if the person is still alive that is.
One wonders if a mod could be made to make the game play more like an action RPG like TQ or Diablo. Probably not.
Well after using Real time combat mode for some time now I have found it plays very much like Diablo and TQ in this mode. I also find using this mode easier than the turn based one. I wish they would make a sequel to Arcanum. because it is such an awesome and unique game.

Silverfall is pretty much a spiritual sequel to Arcanum. Instead of an ending based on Good or Evil choices, you get endings based on Tech/Magic (or Nature, rather) choices.
Oh I have Silverfall but there was a newer version of it that came out called Earth something which is difficult to get a hold of.
I find Silverfall far harder to play than Arcanum. The zombies at the start eem a bit over powered compared to the player character.
Still a great game though, I'll have to have another go at Silverfall now.
real time lets you spam attack spells... this has a HUGE advantage in DPS (and you don't lose extra stamina on partial turn casts)
but it has the disadvantage that you can "waste" clicks (if you click 5 times rapidly on a create, and only 2 were needed to kill it, you would still cast the spell 5 times on it)
and that you easily knock yourself unconscious with very low stamina (if you have enough stamina for 2 castings, and you click 5 times, you will cast the spell twice, then you will also lose the stamina for 3 more castings, which will NOT actually be cast, instead you fall unconscious with an increasingly larger negative stamina the more times you click)
if you are REALLY good at managing real time spell spam it is the most powerful... but you have to be careful, and its sometimes easy to "miss" an enemy or get bogged down and get raped by mobs...
Generally I prefer turn based, with the occasional switch to real time.
