I've played a high Charisma summoner, commanding a veritable army of followers to do my fighting.

I've played as a cunning thief, stealing everything that wasn't nailed down & backstabbing my way through all those fun thieves guild quests.

I've played an evil necromancer, killing anyone I felt like & talking to their spirits after.

And now I wanna try something I haven't done before. I wanna play an unintelligent savage brute. I know I'll need <=4 IN to get the dialog choices, not a problem. But is it in any way possible to make a melee monster who can fight effectively barehanded? What I'm thinking of here is a King Kong wild gorilla type who could tear someone limb from limb, but still be able to get by in the towns without everyone going aggro on him at first sight.

I can't remember which items are available (it's been years since I played), but even if it's something wearable like brass knuckles instead of something I need to sheath like a sword or an ax, I'd be good with that. I know Half-Ogres can get up to 24 ST and 20 DX, and that I'd need to pump Melee and Dodge too. Oh, and I installed the UAP2.0.2 and enable Ogre as a playable race. Reckon he gets an even higher ST max, being pure Ogre?

Other potentially pertinent info is that I'm using my GOG version of Arcanum, through Gog Galaxy 2.0.37, and that I'd like to run Arcanum in a window rather than full screen.

Thanks in advance!

If you want to play only for dumb dialogue options, you can have high(er) IN - Frankenstein Monster/Bride and Idiot Savant backgrounds have these always on, regardless of IN stat.

Sure, why not? :) Although not quite, because...

...gauntlets, you'll need gauntlets, as they add directly to the damage inflicted to your unlucky victims.

Thanks for the reply!

Well, I'm glad to say I made it to Tarant as a "Ran away with the circus" Ogre who I've named Kong. His IN is only a 1, but having worked for the circus, I figure he knows most people are good so he does favors for them unless they seem like baddies. Then he goes and tells on them (really trying to live up to a 1 IN score here). And he only defends himself, he won't attack first...which may be a problem, because after talking to someone who then attacked him, the owner of the establishment upped and attacked me and so (of course) Kong self-defensed himself until the owner was dead. Funny thing about stuff like this is that Virgil just doesn't seem to care.

Anyway, I picked up some Large Leather Armor because "Look, it fits me!" and some Chain Mail Gloves for extra punching power. So far Kong is punching & kicking everything to death without an issue...except for one hidden area where I was just way underprepared just now, lol. And he's keeping anything that looks impressive in hopes of selling it (which is working out fine). He is, however, selling some unidentified items which are turning out to be more expensive than Kong realizes because he figures "If I don't know what this is, and Virgil doesn't want it, it must not be too valuable." So yeah, he's losing out on some nice magic equipment & so is Virgil (as well as the extra money he'd have gotten if he had it ID'd first).

One major difference this time around is that I'm not using any walkthroughs or anything. I've always been a completionist about my games, making sure I don't miss a thing, so I never had any qualms about looking stuff up. But I've finished the game 3 times already and I'm playing a dumb brute anyway, so I'm just playing it as I go.

I was going to suggest an ogre with the Mountain Ogre background, until I read this. Having not tried it yet myself, I honestly don't know how it'd play out. He'd probably have to go with the "Me no wanna fight you" option with every single person he meets; and that'd probably get really tiring really quick (for you as the player, as well as in-character). Still, if you want the most brutish brute possible in the game without hacking, this'd be a good place to start.

Hey, THS! It feels like it's been forever since I've seen you on here! Probably because it's been forever since I was on here....

Anyhow, I'm doing fine with what I built. Kong is punching & kicking everything that attacks him, and trying to be a good boy to those who are good to him. I mean, he had to self-defense himself from a couple of town guard after he killed some bad guys who attacked him first, but it's ok, the rest of the town didn't turn on him (presumably because they didn't see/hear it).

Glad you're still here. I'm still around as well, just not on the main forum as much anymore.

Idiot builds are among the most fun ones, and I like your unique "to dum for wepuns" take. The things people will say to and about you, right in front of you, are hilarious; and definitely don't forget to read what the logbook has to say as well.
I love how Virgil reacts about having an idiot as the chosen one.

Reading this post has made me realize that maybe I never gave this game the chance it deserved. I bought it on GOG launch, but back then I was super into WoW so I never got very far.

Might have to rectify that if the rpg options are this good.... Thanks, Chauncy.

Definitely give it a chance! Not only is it a fun, isometric old school RPG with a great story, but the customization of your PC is just off the charts amazing!

I actually finished as the dumb ogre. It was such a different experience this way. I do know I missed a bunch of stuff (due largely to being a dumb ogre & not using a walkthrough this time), so I'm actually doing a 5th game now. I decided to go for a Druid-like build, with a focus on summoning animals & using element-based spells that use electricity & fire. Also using a sprinkle of healing magic.
