hello. i haven't played "arcanum" for like 15 years, and started now again with the gog version. in the mines of the black mountain clan i am confronted with a huge problem, which wasn't there when i played the game years ago: golems in the black mountain clan mines are level 25 and additionally have desintegration spell. since little imps there are level 8 and me and my party are about level 12 i think it's a bug with the golems level, because there were no such unbeatable golems in the past versions of the game. the only thing with golems was that your weapon is damaged beating them. but no huge level differences were there.
I'm assuming you are using mods?

You could always come back later. Ashbury has a lot of potential experience that should be fairly easy to acquire. Also get Worthless Mutt.

The golems in the mines were always level 25, and have access to the Stone Throw spell

Disintegration isn't even an Earth spell; it's the final spell in the Force college. If they genuinely are using that spell, your only viable option is to reload the game from scratch and start over. It's safe (and recommended) to install the UAP, but stay away from any other mods for now

If (as I suspect) they're actually using Stone Throw, then it's just a matter of your party not being ready for that dungeon — which is famous (infamous?) for its abrupt spike in difficulty, compared to the main quest leading up to it. Like BurningSheep, I recommend doing side quests, and exploring Tarant's sewer system and/or Ashbury's castle, to build yourself up some more before tackling it

Also, be sure you're playing the game in turn-based mode rather than real-time; the real-time mode was added late in the development process, and is known to be imbalanced to the point of almost totally broken
yes, it was probably the stone throw, looks just the same - hurled yellow ball.
but, like i said, i have played the game many times years ago, and golems were never a problem besides their weapon damaging ability. the only thing i can think of is maybe the fact, that i always had a pyro-axe at this point of the game. this time i'm playing persuasion gnome without any magic or fighting abilities. and so i got access to good weapons muh later.
real time mode is fine, if you don't have spells.
another thing - i'm in tulla already, and in the whole game i couldn't find any wooden grip for the feather light axe. have checked all stores any time i have arrived anywhere and got 0. back in the days you could get one from the tarant docks seller. this time i haven't seen any nowhere. so had to wait till i arrived in caladon and could buy a complete axe there.
i have to say, those fix patches which came in the past 20 years didn't do anything good to the game. some monsters use magic now, but it has 0 impact to the gameplay, it's just annoying.

You can get one guaranteed from the blacksmith in Shrouded Hills and the junk dealer in Tarant, the first time you talk with them. After that, they will continue to show up randomly at rural blacksmiths and all junk dealers throughout Arcanum, but only with around a 10% chance per day for blacksmiths, and 20% for junk dealers. So you can either keep trying, or save skim and power shop. (If you plan on doing the latter, remember that you have to move a full screen away before saving and reloading, or else their inventory won't update.)
like i said: checked every seller more than one time and got 0.
