I'm playing a gunslinger/thief character, no points in persuasion (i'm saving that for next character)

2 questions: (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)

1. Falchon's Ache - The guy there got mad and will no longer speak to me (I still have dialogue options). How do I finish this quest peacefully with my character type? He said they worked for a logging company, so I tried searching Tarant to see if I could find the company's headquarters to do something there, but no dice. Am I on the right track, just wrong town?

2. Ashbury Master firearms - I know there's a rescue quest involved here, but it never starts for me. The only dialogue options I have are about his new religion. This guy is pretty critical to my character type, how do I trigger the quest?

Loving the game. These are the first real problems I'm having that I can't seem to figure out.

Needless to say, SPOILERS.

1) There's no need to return to Tarant. If you have at least one point in Persuasion, you can convince the head logger that Gil Bates wants in on the logging industry. Otherwise, just keep taunting him until he attacks.

Protip: Make sure you tell your followers to hold back (F5) and that nobody is equipped with a damage-dealing item (such as a Shield of Force or the spell Body of Fire).

.

2) After he refuses to train you, a halfling will drop a note nearby. Pick up and read the note, then talk to Thorndrop again.

Protip: When you get to the gunfight, target the half-ogre with the hostage first, or he'll kill the hostage and the quest will fail.

Also, depending on your Persuasion, you may have to nag him a bit afterward to get him to actually train you.

The Thorndop quest is actually bugged. You need to talk to him about the mastery quest while standing to his right or the messenger may not appear, and you can never access the dialogue again.

This seems to be because the messenger is set to appear outside the active range (anything beyond a certain distance is inactive to optimize the game and prevent lag).

I have never found a way to reset the dialogue and take the quest. I've always had to load from a previous save or just skip firearms mastery when I messed it up.

I never knew that. I guess I've always stood in the right place, by pure chance.

I fail to get the messenger to appear. I have the game saved just before talking to him for the first time, I always select the line identifying him as the firearms master, go through the religion part, then exit the dialogue. I tried standing possibly in all 9 directions, the messenger never appeared. What am I doing wrong?

UAP installed.
I play this game windowed with -scrolldist:0 parameter, if that might somehow interfere.

Thanks for any tips on that.

The view distance thing might be interfering with the Master Firearms thing. I haven't played that quest line in a really long time, so I am unsure if I am totally making this up or not, but if you are playing with a larger than original resolution/can see outside the original area that the game expects the halfling doesn't trigger because it isn't "off screen." So you have to both stand in the right location in relation to Thorndop and have the screen adjusted corrected. I would try a couple combinations of standing and where you can have the center of the screen and such to try and get it to work. Good luck!
