deejrandom: heh I don't agree wabout Mass Effect, I think it is an RPG. BUT I know that is something that will be flung about on the internets for years :)
Games like Arcanum, though, are rare regardless. It is worth the money spent on it and has always been one of my favorite RPGs...well always as in "Since it came out and I bought it."

Yep. Don't get me wrong though, I really enjoyed both ME1 & 2, but I think if you were going to include RPG in their somewhere it would as in ARPG (action RPG).
There are lots of things a game needs to have to be considered an RPG, such as C&C (choice and consequence - which in most Bioware games is just smoke and mirrors). However, the single feature that truely differentiates an RPG from an ARPG (or any other genre for that matter), is all outcomes, be it combat or otherwise, are descided based on your character's skill not the player's skill. On this point, the ME's fail so therefore must be considered (at best) ARPG's.

Found out there was a demo and tried it (RPGs with demos???)
I was sold on the basis you could make a crude flintlock from broken parts and a metal tube...

If we totally went by your definition, most JRPG's would be ruled out. Very rarely do you have consequences for your choices in those...Yet I still think of them as RPGs.
Which I love, btw.
I don't argue that ME is an Action RPG though...but the key phrase is "RPG." In fact I would argue that "RPG" is a much broader term then the type of game people typically use it for.
..Then again, this is an argument that has went on for years before this and will go on for years after :)

Yes, downloading Arcanum now!!!
Wow, loving this game.....
I'm only in Shrouded Hills but am a level 3 tech Dwarf who's completed the Doc and Smithy quests!
One question though, seeing as this is a Fallout-esque game (by the devlopment team), is there any way to aim for the body, head, etc..?

Three buttons located left of the right shift key are used for called shots -
, Key attacks will be called-shots to the head (comma)
. Key attacks will be called-shots to the arms (period)
/ Key attacks will be called-shots to the legs (forward slash)
Look here for this and other keys . . .=)
Edit: Not on there - if you have the HR patch - F10 key to go to minimal UI - F10 again to go back to the Normal UI
Download the Quick Reference Card from the game extras to print.

Nice! Like I said, I have been looking for a way to take down the UI when I am exploring. Very cool. The called shots are good too. I don't believe I knew about the called shots when I played through the game (well most of the game) way back when XD
