I'm just wondering because as I am running through the Black mountain mines with only Virgil and Sog-Mead, I feel like the companions are the only lacking flaw in a (so far) really great game. The problem with them is the fact that, besides from the first meeting, that lack any real character.

So does anyone know some mods that bring more depth to the companions or add companions with some depth to them.
As far as I know there are not any, unfortunately. At the time the game was created - and really being modded for - companions that have intricate back stories that you explore through dialogue trees really wasn't a thing. :/

I mean, Virgil actually has a huge story arc, it just isn't told in the way you would see it if it was a 2013 Bioware game. He changes a lot over the course of the game - grows and learns along with you the player. And you find out tons of stuff about him personally and where he comes from and all that. The other companions are generally not as "fleshed out." Magnus is to some degree - but less than Virgil really. Some companions have a short arc, or there are moments of important back story or some such (like with Torian Kel, or Raven for example).
I see. Still it is a great game-except for the goddamn Black Mountain Mines!
If you're okay with spoilers, this page gives an idea of which NPCs do anything distinctive at any point in the game:

This thread does into deeper detail (most of which you have to scroll down for):

Yeah, Virgil's character arc is actually pretty brilliantly laid out. You really get the feeling that he's actually a dude with his own problems stewing under the surface before he decides to do anything about it. As opposed to: "Bleep boop. Our relationship score is above 5 I will now tell you my entire life story beep". And I love how you can influence how he turns out!

So far I have to agree with you. It comes off as pretty organic like and unforced with some companions do these days.
Makes it worth it going through the game as a techy who always seems to need desperate healing
I find that there's not a ton of dialogue or events from each follower or npcs regarding each follower, but they certainly took the time to put many where it counts. Like how elves treat dwarves, or good npcs treat evil followers, and so on.

A follower based event I just had happen in a playthrough:

There's actually a special dialogue comment from Simeon Tor in Tulla if you arrive with both Geoffery and Perryman in your party, who both spent time in Sulla before.

Perryman WILL NOT join your party if you are not good aligned, and Geofferey WILL NOT join your party if you are not evil aligned. So you have to be evil and get Geofferey, then once you get to Perryman you have to work on changing your alignment to good.

Then, Perryman WILL NOT join your party if you have Geofferey in your party UNLESS you have 20 charisma and he will make an exception (that's the only thing that did it for me).

So it seems that Troika even took the time to put in a special dialogue for the one player who would steer the course of the game in this extremely specific way who would spend the time to both lower and raise alignment and dropping way too many points into Charisma just to get another mage follower.

Wow.
That is really detailed and dedicated.

Yeah, there're several companions opposed to each other:
Magnus vs Torian
Raven vs Za'an
Perryman vs Geoffrey

The only way to reconcile their differences is with the perk that maxed CHA gives.
It seems that more was planned for Perriman than we actually got.

Perriman and Franklin also turn up in supplementary material, and Franklin was supposed to play a major role in the sequel that never was.
