I'm running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit and Arcanum is really slow. Especially in combat game is virtually unplayable. I have tried commands (-doublebuffer -no3d) and deleting ddraw.dll ( things that improve performance in Windows 7) with no success. My graphic card is Radeon HD6800 with latest Catalyst (12.10).

Can anyone help me? Any ideas what's causing the lagging?

Same here, but I have free Windows 8 RP 32-bit; Intel Dual-Core Celeron CPU; Mobile Intel 4 Series Express GPU, and neither of suggestions helped me to increase performance in original GOG version or custom patched, FPS is really low... Probably the drivers are the reason here...
I'm having the same issues as well, and have tried the same things.

I noticed the game's frame rate/lag issues seem to go away so as long as you do not have the Widescreen patch installed. Do you have that installed?

The only problem with playing without the Widescreen patch is how condensed everything is on a widescreen monitor.
Actually never mind, I still get the same slowdown I do without the widescreen patch installed.

Game is hardly playable in it's current state on my system.
Yeah, same problem here. The game ran fine on Windows 7, but nothing I'm seeing here is making it run properly on Windows 8.

It seems that if you leave the ddraw.dll file in place then the lag isn't there, but you can barely see anything because of the image corruption. Renaming/removing that file fixes the corruption, but the lag is unplayable. Real damn shame, I got the itch to play this again.
Windows 8 Pro 64bit, game runs fine for me. (Fresh install)
I think I might have gotten it to work for me. I had to do the following:

1. Install the Unofficial patch.
2. Install the hi-res patch.
3. Rename/remove the ddraw, dll in the Arcanum directory.
4. Run it in Windowed mode using the option -window.

Absolutely unplayable in full screen mode, but works just fine in windowed mode. Very odd.
If it's a directdraw issue, maybe give ddhack or ddwrapper a try.

The link to the two are at the top of this thread.
I had the same problem and solved it the hard way. First I installed VirtualBox, then Windows XP, then Arcanum, the UAP and finally the HD patch. Lots of work but it paid off. No more lagging or incredibly long load times. As an additional bonus you can now switch to the desktop and back to the game without corrupting the game graphics.

If you want to follow these directions, don't enable the 3D or 2D hardware acceleration for the virtual machine, in my experience it just makes VirtualBox crash all the time.
I spent a few hours today trying all the suggestions on the forums for improving performance under windows 8. Sadly nothing seemed to help. I spun up a Windows XP machine using VMWare Workstation 8, installed Arcanum (w/ high res patch) and it runs silky smooth.
I have tried the different command lines on the shortcut and this hasn't fixed the slowdowns i have done this with directdraw renamed and deleted still had the slowdowns on both occasions I have also tried the different patches [high res and unofficial patches] with these things combined and it still hasn't fixed the slowdowns im using windows 8 pro 64 bit here are my specs.

Card name: AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series
Operating System: Windows 8 Pro 64-bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 16368MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11

I love this game and i got a serious crpg itch that needs scratching and the only prescription is more arcanum is there any way to fix the lag and slowdowns so i cac play this game silky smooth ? pls help.

yes and like i mentioned in my post i have already tried the command lines and all the different suggestions posted on the threads and the game is still laggy and slow
I get this too, a laggy Arcanum on a machine that should eat it for breakfast.

Windows 8 (64bit)
16GB RAM
2TB HDD
AMD FX8350
AMD HD7950

It's annoying and quite strange.
