This was a really hard review for me to write, because I'm not sure if "Another World" deserves only 3 stars. However, speaking strictly from my own experience, I think it's a 7 out of 10 stars game.
First, let me say that I love rotoscoping, and I absolutely loved the art in this game, it's super cool. Also, this game absolutely reeks of style; It gets the atmosphere and logic of a traditional sci-fi adventure down to a T, and that is a really hard thing to do in a video game.
All of those involved in making this game are obviously well read and familiar with the very best conventions of the genre.
That being said, I didn't have all that much fun playing the game.
I found the controls way too clunky for words. I frequently felt frustrated at the game for being tricky to control, and not for any other reason.
True, if the controls were better, than the game would be over too quick, but that's no way to make a game challenging.
There are plenty of platformers from this game's time period that got the gameplay right, but most of them were console exclusives.
So, like I said, it's hard to rate such a beautiful game with only 3 stars, because it looks so cool, and it the atmosphere has a lot going for it, but sometimes beautiful packages are just what they are.
