I recently bought Anachronox and while trying to start the game up after installation I get an error message that reads:

"Couldn't load renderer!

Anachronox is not compatible with your current video hardware/software combination.

If you have a 3dfx card, please use the WickedGL drvier. For any other card, make sure you have the latest driver from your chip manufacturer."

So on and so on...

What does this mean? I'm a novice when it comes to troubleshooting gaming problems. Any help would be much appreciated.

Here are my computer specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Inspiron 530
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E7400 @ 2.80GHz
6 MB RAM
DirectX 11
ATI Radeon HD 4550
Driver Model: WDDM 1.1
Version: 8.56.1.16

Have you ever installed DirectX 9.0c on your machine? This is a legacy DirectX driver that is needed for many older games, and it installs alongside DX11 and will not interfere with newer games. Go here to get it:

You should also be sure to get the latest drivers for your graphics card from the ATI website, if you don't have them already.

Post back to let us know if it works.
Right on, my friend. That got it working. Thanks so much!

No problem, glad you got it working!
Hi,

I got the same problem at the game's launch and tried some of the solutions I found online (change colours to 16 bit, install DirectX 9.0c, compatibility modes...) but nothing worked!

My notebook is running on Win8

The game looks really cool and I can't wait to play it, so thanks in advance for your help (:
Solved it myself by using nGlide from Zeus-Software, a "3Dfx Voodoo Glide wrapper"

Google it!
I have the same issue and tried both solutions and I still get the same error. Any other ideas?
Never mind. I finally got it working after updating my graphics drivers (as well as trying EVERY suggestion on the Support page).

Worked for me as well. But now, when I start the game I see a warning that demo version of WickedGL is being used, and I have a rotating logo in the top right corner all the time. Quite annoying!

Has anybody encountered that, and perhaps has some solution?
IF RECOMMENDED SOLUTION DOES NOT WORK FOR YOU...

Don't use the 3dfx fix. The graphics will be worse (and probably laggy). This error message comes up if you don't have OpenGL driver support.

The original post listed his driver model as WDDM 1.1. That is a Microsoft Windows update driver not an official AMD (or whatever you have) driver. You need the official driver because Microsoft DirectX and OpenGL are rival technologies and so drivers from Microsoft DO NOT support OpenGL applications like Anachronox.

Getting official drivers should be easy in most cases, however if like me you have Windows 8/8.1 and an Intel GMA 4500 chipset you will need to install this driver (this is the latest one which works):

- June 16th 2011 driver from Intel website -

Sorry, I'm not allowed to post link here.

My main advice is get OpenGL working because it is better than 3dfx fix.
I'm still having the 'couldn't load rebderer' message despite trying everything mentioned in tjhis post! Any other ideas? Please help as this is my all time favourite game!

Can you tell us your computer specs? I'm not sure what else to suggest beyond what's already mentioned in this thread, but maybe if we know your hardware and your current drivers we can get one of these solutions to work.
I tried some of the solutions and it crashes after the first loading screen.

I got a Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 and Windows 7 64 bit

I am also trying to run it through Galaxy, I might try running it through the DRM free installer, it did work for Riven.

Any suggestions?

Get yourself a Linux distro and play via wine. Kein Problem

That does not really help, but thanks for the tip.
