I'm aware that Machine for Pigs is a lot shorter than Dark Descent and a quite different game, but are the two directly connected in terms of story? Or is it possible to play and enjoy A Machine for Pigs without prior knowledge of The Dark Descent, if I'm in the mood for something short and easy? Will it spoil Dark Descent for me if I play these games in the wrong order or does it make no difference?

There's no direct connection to the first game, but it is set in the same "universe."

So no spoilers in playing Machine first?

I would say yes, no spoilers, so go ahead and play it. ;)
