Okay, so, I'm only 5 minutes into playing, but, right away I'm questioning and would like some input because it just doesn't make any farking sense to me and totally has killed the game already for me.

Why can't I pick up a candle/candleholder/torch and use it as light or to light other candles/torches? The game has the mechanic of picking things and using them, wtf can I not do it with candles/torches? Also, why am I collecting tinderboxes that are only good for 1 light? Do the people who made this game know what a tinderbox actually is? It seems not, yet, they are a crucial element. Plain dumb. There should be practically endless uses of 1 single tinderbox. Absolute nonsense to me and how am I supposed to take the game seriously with such absolute nonsense?

Am I missing something?

I think you just think too much to let the immersion suck you in. Please relax and enjoy! * no spoilers *

Well, I hardly think it is "thinking too much" when the game presents you with mechanics to pick up and use things in the environment to your advantage but not the most useful thing like light/candles/torches, as if they know they'd have a stupid game if they let you do that, so they just remove the ability, which, to me, just makes it a stupid game. Am I supposed to turn my brain completely off for their game? If so, I have no interest. But really, I didn't come here to complain (it was free on steam, so I figured I'd try it, I had always been curious.) I'm just trying to understand the mentality that went behind the decision, or, as I said, figure out if I'm missing something. Hard to let immersion suck me in when it takes me out with blatant illogic like this.

I certainly appreciate your response, thanks!

It's on "the shelf" for whenever I'm motivated to try it again/have more clarity about wtf I can't pick up candles and why the tinderboxes are only good for 1 use. I mean, they could have simply made you find single strike-anywhere matches and that would make more sense than a tinderbox that only gets 1 use.

I really wouldn't think too hard about this as pretty much any game will be ruined. Consider the following:

1) I'm carrying 50 RPGs but can't put a scratch on a wooden door. The door will only yield to the might of a flimsy iron key
2) A wooden fence is 2 feet high yet I can't climb over it
3) Invisible barriers in sandbox games
4) Can't open a certain door without solving a puzzle on a table that you can just walk around
5) Being able to carry 12 guns at once
6) Jumping in water and instantly dying, even in fully encased environment suits
7) In a game sequel, your PC forgets the skills he/she/it learned in the prequel
8) Not being able to carry equipment from one level to the next
9) Shooting things like barrels and cars and tables and chairs makes them explode!!!
10) PC gets caught stealing and everyone in the game world wants to kill you
11) Corny OTT villians
12) A character with 1 HP left can function exactly the same as a character with 100 HP
13) Jumping from 200ft and hitting the bottom doesn't hurt at all
14) Enemies with their unerring clairvoyance always know where the PC is regardless of cover and lighting
15) Freaky science where combining a firecracker, frozen chocolate pudding, duct tape and farting on it for 5 seconds makes C4
16) In RPGs a mage not proficient with a flail can't even hold it. I guess wrapping your fingers around a dagger is okay but wrapping your fingers around a flail shaft takes some pretty extensive training.

Do I really need to go on? Cos I could fill pages with some stupid things you see in games. But yeah, back to what I was saying, just don't think about it too much, all games have nonsensical things like this.

Egh. I don't think too hard about it at all, actually I barely thought about it, it's just so glaringly obviously stupid to me I can't just not think about it. I understand how things go in games, I've played many. Again, this just seems outright glaringly over-the-top nonsensically stupid, moreso than other scenarios in other games (given the gameplay mechanics and all), which is why I made the thread asking the question. I'll take it at this point that no one actually has any sort of good answer for me. All I'm looking for is some sort of logical consistency within the game or a reason that it lacks for this game. I'm not saying I should be able to break a window and climb down the scaffolding and escape the frikken castle. I'm saying I should be able to light a torch with a candle IN THIS GAME where it seems I can pick things up in the environment and use them within the environment and where finding light is important. I found the light, it's all over the place, but for some reason I can't light it unless I have a tinderbox, which disappears after a single use? That seems to be the whole game (haha! find tinderboxes so you can see otherwise you DIE!) Just a dumb game, I figure, but I was just asking if I was missing something. Apparently not, I'm not even going to miss playing it.

: ) Okay, I get it, you started on the wrong foot with this game and I won't try to change your mind about it. But you don't die if you can't see. It just affects your sanity when you are too long in a dark place, causing some distortion on the screen.
You just can't do anything you want in any game (wouldn't that be great?). If you accept that and go along with what the devs set up for you then you are in for a great experience.

Thanks. This doesn't happen for me in MOST games, I'm usually fine with accepting the world and mechanics as presented to me by the creators and I "suspend my disbelief" to whatever level necessary to enjoy the game. However it happened here that I cannot, the illogic of being able to pick up a match and light a candle (or pick up a chair and move it) yet I can't pick up the candle to light another candle or a torch, is just too damn stupid to me.
Because limited designing talent and the need of ignoring the most irrational gameplay mechanics that question the most simple laws of logic.

Welcome to the every Frictional's game.
