As the title says. Al Qadim is part of the Forgotten Realms setting. It takes place in Zakhara, which is to the south\south east on the Forgotten Realms map.

Yes the setting is in FR but it was always branded as it's own setting.
Ravenloft is a part of Planescape but it has it's own exclusive setting as well.

1) Ravenloft was from before Planescape, as both the stand alone Count Strahd adventures, and as a campaign setting.
2) EVERY D&D setting from the 2nd edition era is technically part of Planescape. Just like every setting was technically part of Spelljammer too.

Exactly this. The Al-Qadim boxed set did not have the Forgotten Realms logo on it. The three other separate FR settings (Maztica, The Horde, and Kara-Tur/Oriental Adventures) DID get the logo, because they were supposed to be played as part of FR, while Al-Qadim was supposed to be either separate, or, if you had the FR boxed set, you could use it as part of the campaign setting.

So yeah, Al-Qadim should be treated as a separate setting.

I do have 2 seperate Al-Qadim box sets, Arabian Adventures accessory (beautiful art on that one), as well as many stand alone adventure books and I gotta say that Al-Qadim is MASSIVE. It's such a big geographical area and it is truly on the other side of the world compared to Dalelands, Cormyr etc... I always thought that Abeir Toril was not really an elliptical sphere, but more like a flat world, or like a plane. Zakhara is truly high level, high fantasy. It does separate itself from FR in this context. 2nd edition is just so beautiful, I can talk about it for ages. That was the pinnacle of classical frp.

*puts on thick rimmed glasses just so he can push then up from the tip of his nose up to the bridge while saying in an annoyingly nasally voice* Well, actually...

Aber Toril was, by canon, a global world not a flat one, and Zakhara was just one jungle-y peninsula south of the Faerunian continent.

But your sentiments were correct, they may as well have been different sides of the world, considering how little the two interacted.
