According to all the lets plays and guides you're supposed to spawn on the ship but I'm in the front of the house and can't figure out what to do
the car trunk has a ball and I can get the hook but then there's nowhere to go

You don't end up on the ship until later on. If I remember correctly you're supposed to hide in the trunk and ride with the car through a gate.

go to the end of the car. Open the trunk. Then a guy go out and drive the car.
Take the hook carefully without the guys got you. Go to a pile. Use the ball. Go to a statue. Use hook.
