This just happened to me twice in the first game. I read the manual but I didn't see anything in there about the P key corresponding to any actions, such as a pause button.

Basically the game itself freezes, but the music still keeps playing but I end up having to alt-tab out or something then close the game and restart it.

If anyone could help I would much appreciate it.

Well, the manual says "P" is default for pause... I tried that once, in my case the game "freezes", too, with music running. After pressing "P" again, the game seems to hang, pressing the space bar once or twice will do the trick to play on :)

Huh, must've missed that in the manual. I know I read through it pretty thoroughly.
