Totally agree with you GeorgeCY.

AITD 2 and 3 are quite bad.

The first one is just spot on. It's a shame they tried to do things totally different in the other 2 games.

And yes the puzzles in the third game make no sense at times. There are zero clues whatsoever as to what item you should use at a given time.
I'm having the same problem myself. Annoying isn't even a word for it at this point.
From where are you thrownig the lamp? If you are doing it in front of the altar, then walk away, stand in the middle of the "lake", save your game (becouse it's easy to miss) and throw it. (Lamp must be alight).
Never mind, I found the solution.

I restarted my game, and when I got to the tree, I used the talisman, grabbed the hook, and threw the lamp, and the cut scene triggered.

What happened before was that I grabbed the hook and left without knowing that I had to throw the lamp at the tree. When I came back to do it, it wouldn't let me.
