In this post it is mentioned GOG's version of Alone in the Dark 1-3 has compressed audio files which makes the game offered here inferior. I couldn't find any information on this in the subforums so I would appreciate if anyone can confirm this.

No, AITD 1, 2 and 3 are running in DOSBox and use uncompressed PCM audio stored in CD image files (GAME.GOG; the corresponding cue file is GAME.INST).

The problem for many with Alone in the Dark 1 is that it doesn't include the MIDI music of the original floppy release, which many people prefer. But the CD music is not more compressed then in the original CD release as far as I can tell.

Ok, let's put this to rest.
1.- GOG's version is the CD version which has uncompressed redbook audio music. It has the advantage of voice over and a better soundtrack, just that a lot of people prefer the old one because of nostalgia; it's not technically superior, at least with this game.
2.- Alone in the Dark has never had MIDI. Ever. Nope. Sorry. It always used Frequency Modulation through the OPL2 chip found in Soundblaster cards. For it to have MIDI you would needed a hardware sound module like the Roland MT-32 or Sound Canvas SC-55 to play back music.
1 and 2 have uncompressed tracks, 3 comes with .ogg files (in the music folder).
For those who don't know, DOSBox supports a weird BIN/CUE image with compressed MP3 or OGG files. Just got to open the cue sheet and you will see the references to the MP3 or OGG files.

My copy of AitD 3 is also RAW PCM: GAME.GOG/tracks.cue

I believe that was a recent downgrade, as mentioned here, so you might want to hold on to that copy. I made the mistake of updating mine with Galaxy and got stuck with the .OGG files.

I think you can roll back to previous versions on the Galaxy Client
Ah that explains it. Thanks for clearing this up :)
All I know is I prefer the non CD audio. Is there any option to have this soundtrack instead?
