So I'm trying out the first game, and I'm in the very first room and already a big rat-monster is attacking me. I've figured out that he can be killed, albeit slowly and painfully. My question is whether there's any point to doing so? If I take the time to kill him will more keep spawning in or will I be rewarded by being able to explore the area in peace? As clunky as the combat is, if the baddies respawn I think I'll move on to another game.

Bonus question: I'm using my xbox 360 pad to play this through joy2key. It's well-known that the "run" function is extremely buggy. Does anyone know if there might be a way to solve this problem through the more advanced functions of joy2key? Just mapping the up arrow twice to a single button press doesn't seem to work.

I can only answer the first question. No, they do not respawn but the point of the game is to avoid as many battles as possible. You will get use to it and after some time after entering a new location you will immediately think: "Hmm, this spot looks fishy, how can I block the potential enemy that may come out of it?" In the first room you should push the wardrobe and block the window and then push the chest to block the trapdoor (zombie will come out of it if you don't). Since you have just began I suggest to restart the game and follow those tips. Have fun with the game!

Thanks for the tips! So far I've found that many enemies can be beaten in melee by using the scenery to keep them at a distance and whaling on them from "cover" . . . kind of a cheat I guess but since I'm mainly playing for the historical curiosity, it's nice to just concentrate on puzzles and not worry about the clunky combat.
