So the game works fine as far as the main menu and intros, both are nice and dandy(Though the lack of in-game options menu is annoying).

My issue starts when I actually try to PLAY the game. It shows the loading stork for a second or two then flashes to 'in-game' which is nothing more than a black screen with the main menu music playing over it. I'm able to access the Escape menu with all those options(But it crashes on trying to save). And I can move and click & drag the cursor to make selection boxes, but can select nothing since there's nothing but black to select. This is in custom games.

In the campaigns it's much of the same, but if I select 'Restart' on the Escape menu it shows me the world.. that's nothing but water tiles with absolutely nothing on it, here I can pan the camera and all that, but there's nothing to do but stare at water tiles with absolutely nothing else on it but the water sound effects. I've messed with the trouble shooting options but gotten the same thing, or just CTDs on launch when setting it to anything else.

As a note the first game 'Alien Nations' Works fine so far.

I'd post my DxDiag info... but it seems basic text documents are the 'Wrong File Format' and there's a character limit to these posts so it won't update if I paste it in.

Firstly I was having the same problem and I was installing in the default path that GoG Galaxy installs games.

I think the point of _ms_3 saying install the game in a custom path, was that you make a new folder in your C: drive or D: drive or whereever you install games. I made a new folder called GoGgames, because I was going to put a GoG game into this folder so the path is C:\GoGgames

Then I chose to install here in this newly made folder and everything seems to work now. I mean so far at least the tutorial is loading up not as a blank screen or water. I'll update when I play a custom map etc.

Does that make sense, I assume you could equally well make a folder called Frank, because maybe you like the name frank, and your custom path would be C:\Frank

Hope this helps. It's annoying when you get a new (old) game and it's not working. Been happening to me a lot with steam and Origin for older games.

Also thanks _ms_3 for that suggestion!
I am also getting the same issue with the cursor flickering and the black screen.

However, I have noticed that if I press restart level from the option list, instead of a black screen I get an endless ocean.

I have tried to reinstall the game into a different folder as suggested, unfortunately this does not work. Now not only do I still have the black screen/endless ocean bug but also on GoG Galaxy I am getting an installation failed for this game when I try to reinstall it. I can install it using the separate installer (The bugs still remain) but I'd like to have it on GoG galaxy.

Has anyone found a solution? I have noticed there is a patch for this game but I'm unsure if it's included with this installation. Perhaps this may help?

I'm not a computer technical person so any help is much appreciated.

Thank you!
Update:
I seem to have stumbled upon a fix to the black / endless ocean glitch!

Step 1: In the installation folder "C:/GoG Games/The Nations Gold" go into the "tools" folder.
Step 2: Open "tools.exe"
Step 3: Click on Troubleshooting then press Start.
Step 4: Turn off "AGP Texture Memory" and tick user defined resolution.
Step 5: Then press save.
Step 6: Repeat steps 1-3 then turn back on "AGP Texture Memory" and tick resolution "fix".
Step 7: Press save

The settings should now say "Benutzerdeiniert" and for some reason beyond me the game works perfectly (With a minor cursor flickering).

I hope this helps anyone else with this issue.

I seem to be having the same issue and have tried all of the above help but still continue to get the black screen.
Hello,

I've attempted both installing in a custom path and goinging to my tools.exe troubleshooting settings and changing the items metioned above. Neither have solved my issue. Are there any other solutions out there?
The game works great on LINUX. Just started playing on Fedora 31 with Wine under KDE - I got the KDE Fedora spin and installed all relevant Wine packages. The game does not work on Windows 10, this is the first time I am able to finally play it after purchasing it over a year ago. On Windows the frame rate is unacceptable and the flickering cursor adds to the problem even more...

So install Linux and Wine and the game runs just great!

This would be helpful if you told us where to install linux and wine specifically

Linux is an Operating System, like Windows. You have to download a Linux distribution image (DVD iso in case of Fedora) and either burn that image to a DVD or make a bootable USB pendrive with Rufus on Windows. Then you have to install that operating system on one of your drives - or allocate some free space and install there.

Note that you should BACK UP all your relevant data on external media, because you can loose all your existing partitions and operating systems, if something goes wrong - or most notably, you mess up... So might loose Windows and you will need to reinstall it again, so have your product key written down somewhere, or if your PC came preinstalled with it, it might have signed the hard drive on which it is installed, so it will detect that on a reinstall.

As for Wine, it's sort of like an emulator, it runs Windows programs on Linux. So, once you have a Linux OS (operating system) installed and set up, you will have to install the Wine packages.

If you are worried about fiddling with your main PC, maybe you have a second one to install [Fedora] Linux on. If not, and you really would like to have Linux with Wine to play Windows games that don't run on Windows well or anymore, you might consider buying a cheap PC or a used PC - but consider the hardware specs, so you have something that will reasonably run your game.

And be aware that not all Windows programs will run on Wine, or run well. It's a matter of trial and error to see if a program does work or not, so it might be too big of a hassle for you, to install another OS just for that...

Maybe a better alternative would be to run an older Windows version (system) through a virtual box (pc emulator/virtualization) on your existing Windows installation. If you have older Windows systems, that might be a good choice to follow - and reuse those old systems.

For me, this game - and some other games - works well on Fedora Linux. On Windows it's unplayable at all. Worms Forts also work fine, and somewhat better than on MS OS. And it's also a good idea to find older hardware to play older games, if you can. But again, maybe it's much more affordable for you to run an older Windows OS through a virtual machine on your current setup.

And one other thing: be aware that GOG (and Steam) offers some games in multiple versions, for different operating systems, notably Linux and Mac. So when you buy a retro Classic here, see if a Linux port is available as well - that is, if you have linux. Again, maybe a virtual machine will be a good option for you.

As a final note, you need to be aware, that Linux OS might not have the drivers for your hardware, or you might not get such great performance as you would expect. Linux works on plenty of PCs and configurations, so far I always had GPU hardware acceleration, but there is so much hardware out there, that some stuff might not be supported - especially not well known brands/models. I never had to worry about that, but it's good to keep that in mind. Actually, current Windows versions have problems with older hardware or specific hardware, and linux supports that (for me).
