Hi

well sadly i am afflicted with this too, i have looked in various posts for a solution but i never found anything concrete, so i will ask here - is there any actual fix for this problem as i am unable to play either of these titles, - i start them and its just a black screen, i wait and wait and wait and nothing.

I have tried win xp sp3 and admin mod compat settings - no change, i have switched off DEP for the game exes but no no change
i updated my nvidia graphics driver, but no change

what is the solution?

good news is that now teh two games are working - frustrating that there is no way to establish what exactly caused the games to now work.

I had tried all the suggestions i found online and no result, but now both work and seem to work even if i play around with the external game settings. The only issue is that AOW2 runs a bit slow with its decision making, but its still very playable

the only thing i can think of is that i had a windows 10 update occur on the weekend , so i have to wonder if that did it, i dont know what exactly a windows 10 update would do (given that microsoft is graually removing more and more of legacy d3d support)

These games both worked fine on my XP computer, they worked fine when I played them on Windows 7, but now that I'm using Windows 10, I have the same problem you do: It works until it doesn't, and then I just get a never ending black screen. So far, the only fix I've found to work is fully removing the program and reinstalling.

I am experiencing a bizarre issue with AoW2: TWT. My computer freezes when launching the game requiring hard restart.

A known issue with AoW:SM at least is that it will get choppier and eventually refuse to start, just displaying a black screen, the longer the computer goes without being rebooted. Why, no idea, and untermenschen's mention of an update above makes it sound that the computer had been rebooted recently, but Fry_Lord's "It works until it doesn't" sounds something like it, just that a reboot should fix it if that's the issue, without reinstalling.
