I had AoW1 up and running about 1 year ago on my computer with no problems. Now I wanted to continue my campaign, and suddenly I get the error message: "German is not supported by the code page". Already puzzling, since the game runs in english language, keyboard input language is also set to english.

This error can be acknowledged with an "OK", game keeps running. However, if I want to Customize my hero, I get an access violation error at address 55788357 in module "AoWEPACK.dpl". Read of address 00000024, which then freezes leaves me with an empty background, and no option to escape, other than the Task manager.

I can however:
1) Start the campaign with the default hero
2) Start a scenario with a default hero

I have tried the following to no avail:
1) Compatbility modes - Win XP, Sp2 and Sp3
2) Run as administrator
3) Run in window
4) Turn off sound (read in an unrelated forum entry, and thought to give it a go as a last resort)

None of the above seem to affect the error.

Anyone else experienced anything similar??
Maybe a corrupt file? Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling?
What language is selected in the setup program?
Try this link: https://www.validstrategies.com/files/file/12-age-of-wonders-gog-german-language-pack/

If it doesn't automatically direct you to an age of wonders page it's because the language pack version has changed. Just type in age of wonders in the search bar for that site and look for the gog version. You can find the same language pack elsewhere, but this one has been linked on this forum before.

Basically what happens is that the characters come from a table in the engine based on addresses. The German language has extra characters (e.g. characters with umlauts, etc.) therefore the addresses don't line up in the same way. It can sometimes happen that the engine starts looking for an address of something that doesn't exist in the table. That's where that error is coming from.

If you do a clean install, you will avoid the error altogether. But, if you enjoy playing in multiple languages or just want to see the option for German characters, adding the language packs will help you avoid the crashes on a current install.

If you perform a clean install, just remember to grab your save files. Whichever path you take, let me know if that works out for you.

Hey. It's been a while since this thread was active, but I have the same problem. I did install the GOG language pack from that site, but when I try to start the game now, I get a runtime error "216 at 00003924". Do you know what causes this? I can't get the campaign to work otherwise.

I'm not sure what the error code means off the top of my head. What operating system are you using to run the program? (E.g. Windows 10, Windows 11, Linux, etc.)

Are you using WINE or a VM (Virtual Machine)? If there is a middle-layer, I've run into cases where I had multiple installs without realizing it and it created runtime errors (it was pointing the program to files that didn't exist in the other directory).

Have you tried completely uninstalling the programs and then reinstalling?
