...who hated this game?. It's filled with bad dialog, lifeless acting and badly camouflaged propaganda. Even the "twist" at the end doest help it. Why is it even 4/5?
Well, I didn't think it was totally rubbish, but I played the original German version.
Didn't think the story was very good though, and especially the characters where a bit weird.

Frankly, I think the only ok thing about this game is the visual style (it appeals to me at least). I am literally at the second screen. And the protagonist lady (?) just landed with the helicopter and I already HATE the dialog. Not to mention the poor, poor, POOR voice acting and voice editing. Reviewers keep saying that the german version is way better (Probably because the game was written in german originally) but whoever did the translation/voice direction did a real lousy job.

Can't say much about the story. Don't think I have the stomach to play a minute further.

[Also, I'm playing on OSX so there's this controls bug - You do not want to play this game in windowed mode on a 27" screen, trust me].

*Drags the game to Trash and moves on*
i want to see the good in this game. I havnt played the "final cut" yet, and i plan to give it a try. But when i played the original it was awful. The voiceacting was really bad... the story wasnt connecting for me.. and the puzzles felt awkward. Really disappointing since i love every other daedalic release that iv played. So i want to believe that maybe "the final cut" could change my mind. But im not too optimistic.
I would say English voice-over is its biggest flaw. Actors change intensity of speaking randomly or not at all and some lines are a bit weird indeed.
I enjoyed it. I expected an average game and it was. Interesting story idea, beautiful art and music, old-school puzzles. Kind of Syberia quality except with faster unfolding of plotline and living characters around.

All Daedalic games would gain by supporting German VO + English subs a lot, in my opinion.
The voice acting is pretty bland and the plot is a tad too preachy, but it's not a horrible game. A tad above mediocre, but not anything that will be remembered as a classic, nor a game I will revist.
I hated at times.
These times are called "dialogs".

My review goes like this ...

This is a 3.5 stars point&click to me.

I enjoyed the gameplay, the puzzles and the graphics.
I have tolerated the ecologist preaching.
And finally, I have suffered the cheesy story and the soap opera dialogues.

I thought I would be the only one who felt that way. Even though I like Daedalic Entertainment games, this game has not shown even the slightest spark. No immersive intro or setting to compensate for the typically slower part of the game where you get to know the protagonist(s). I couldn’t resonate with the setting and found the male protagonist extremely dull. The melodramatic reaction of the female protagonist as well as the hint to where this game would lead story-wise (time-travelling to avert an environmental disaster) just put me off entirely. The phrases were unoriginal and appeared clichéd to me. I feel bad for being so judgmental, but I admittedly couldn’t bring myself to continue playing beyond the first location.
I finished the game, but I found it tedious, nonsensical, and very badly-made. Yes, the English voicing was terrible - I was convinced for a while that the lead character was voice synthesizer - but that wasn't where it ended. The puzzles were not interesting - one was bugged and couldn't be solved, on my play through, and one I accidentally forwarded through with what I thought would be a hint button, and the rest were largely no fun.

I very much enjoyed the art, but felt that the story did not really interact with the settings. Like the art department turned in backgrounds and storyboards, and then someone from the engineering department arbitrarily stuck a story onto the pictures.

It was clearly not a finished piece, what with the languages changing from time to time in the mouse menus and the like. Basic translations are incorrect. Failure to follow the designers' crazy story logic, which is rarely communicated to the player, can get you stuck in spots by what seem to be bugs, until it turns out that you have neglected to do something bizarre and can't progress until you figure out what it is. In one spot, I opened a door that was supposed to be closed until a set of cryptic actions were completed, and when I finally consulted a walkthrough to get out of the area, the game would not let me close the door again. Reload.

I like the idea and the basic plot, but the execution is simply awful.
Well, I just wanted to state that this game DESERVES a remake. Resons for that:
1. Outdated tecs: While somebody might argue "this game got style" you cannot ignore that the later DeadalicGames simply improved A LOT in image quality and have keepen the level of style established in their earlier games.
In other words: The game is heavyly LowRes and maxing it out results in perverted loading times!
2. Bad controls: Maybe we´ve just became too used to GOOD adventure controls...
...but A New Beginning simply doesn´t had good ones!
3. Bad synchronisation for non-germans. I love the german syncho of this game, but listened to the english one, too---> and it´s terrible!

But I liked most of this game anyways.
How much this game is making fun of its storyline in the end, how many twists it got, how nicely it´s designed!
Those SoapOperaStyleCritisism: It all makes sense in the end! Don´t you see it?
I´d give it 4/5 stars out of the box. Three Stars for the current english version. A remake that would fix all those issues got the potential to create an all-time classic!
This forum is great, by this forum only I came to know about the various games of new technology. I never played most of the games here, this game also I never played. But I don't think this game is bad, I never hated any game.
Well I liked it. :)
Hahaha, sorry for necroing, but I'm happy to see I'm not the only one. If english voiceover is bad, let me tell you that the french one is plain awful! It's a major turn-off for me, plus the fact that I already found many enigmas very illogical. And also the badly written dialogues (or at least their translation in french)
I concur OP.
The English version of this game is full of glitches and is straight out broken.
I wrote a Review of this game on the game page but it somehow got shoved in the middle of the stack of reviews rather than Newest > Oldest order.

ADVISORY: May contain spoilers.

Upon my initial impression was that the game wasn't running correctly do to compatibility issues, So I tried everything suggested within the Support Section of GOG.
After realizing this game is just that horribly broken I pressed on.

Immediately from the start of this game I experienced Bad voice acting, like they took several different voice clips and pieced them together. Most of the Voice acting is just cringe worthy.
Other notable glitches I've experienced are; Entering the globe as Fay (She just stands there).
Cut-scene reset at the ruin library. Stuck behind table at bar in jungle. Just to name a few.
There is really no fluid transition when interacting with items before/after completing a puzzle, meaning the dialog repeats the same phrase.
The puzzles were too easy do to such linear dialog (after piecing together broken English, which was a constant puzzle in itself) and few interactive items within each scene.

It wasn't until I got stuck behind the table in the jungle, after completing the card game, that it finally killed my patience for wanting to complete this game.
I did some searching about this major glitch and the Devs (Deadalic) know about it and won't fix it but, they will send you a save state which loads after this section of the game.
I also read that some walk-throughs state that you need to give the drunk guard the truck keys instead of his keys.
I don't feel a Walk-through should be a necessity to any game, especially Point and Click adventure games, unless it's needed for translation purposes. Not as some sort of Alternative Patch for a game that's broken and missing important information.

The only way I suggest this game (English version) is to get it when it goes on sale for less than $2.
OR
Take the cheaper alternative and just watch a play-through on Youtube.
As I´ve already said four years ago, this game simply needs a remaster or remake.
