God love the people who developed this. I'm love Surviving Mars and have thought something like this would be a great addition for a long time.
The problem is that the train system can't seem to run on it's own without constant 'human' intervention.
1.) The train stations need Machine Parts to stay running. But when they break down, if there are no Machine Parts at the end with the broken station, there's no way to deliver them except by manually having a drone or Transport Rover bring the parts there. In other words, the 'automation' breaks down.
2.) The system for managing movement of cargo for the train stations is weird and bad. The stations tend to get filled up with common resources (i.e. Metals) and then not be able to move anything else more important.
3.) Placing the line (and you need to have both stations in place) is very, very finicky. It needs perfectly flat, totally obstacle free route the entire way or else you can't place the line. This is frustrating because it never indicates where exactly the blockage or uneven ground is: You have to Flatten the area over and and over and over again, trying to find the rough spot.
4.) Although you can build the track from just 'one end' initially--which is great, not having to have Drone Bases along the whole route to maintain it--if any damage occurs to the track (i.e. Meteor strike), you have to manually transport drones and materials the break happened...
5.) . . . and sometimes damage to the rail line seems to 'break' the system completely, such that you cannot put trains back on the track. The stations are running, the track is repaired but . . . nothing. It refuses to allow you to place a train back on, saying, "No more trains can be placed on this line." But there are ZERO trains on the line! This just seems like a coding breakage or something. Perhaps it can be patched soon.
Overall, the trains are just so finicky, demanding, and fragile that it doesn't even make sense to use them.
