Playing as a mass of abyssal horrors rolling through town, literally tearing through anything that stands in your way, is devilishly fun. I've been playing this game on and off since release - it's easily one of my favourite indies, and one of the best Lovecraftian games I've experienced (even if it isn't the kind to make your skin crawl).
Definitely pick this up if you want something that does HP Lovecraft's works justice, with the added bonus of the creators' unique spin. The mood - especially the music and design - makes Sea Salt one of the few games that really "gets" the original works, without wanting to emulate them 1:1. I won't spoil anything, but let's just say the plot is very true to the spirit of what Lovecraft would write about: humans getting in too deep with something they have no business dealing with...
Sadly, the gameplay is a little lacking. I personally enjoyed the simple mechanics (attack, defend/regroup, move). And I really got a kick out of variety and strategy in the different units.
But it would have been nice if my units didn't decide to go for a frolic across the whole town, aggroing everything along the way, when I just wanted them to sneakily regroup behind cover. Little things like that made the game frustrating at times, but never enough to make me want to walk away or give up entirely.
There were also a few typos, mainly in the Book of Dagon (in-game bestiary) which I found disappointing because they broke my immersion in what is otherwise a solid game.
Still highly recmommend for anyone who loves Lovecraft's work!
