Detective Gallo is a 2D point and click adventure game, in the vein of the old classics. Sadly, while it has a very nice art style, the writing grows tired pretty quickly, with the humour almost never moving beyond what you see in the intro.
The story is bad, even by nonsense comedy standards. Suffice to say, you'll feel like you have solved nothing by the end of the game. Said ending also comes pretty quickly (I finished the game in around 4 hours). Despite being short, the amount of backtracking is disgusting, and the puzzles rarely will make you feel like you had a brilliant intuition. The jokes are uneven, with some good ones, and some not-so-funny ones. The game throws them at you constantly, so the ones that miss really hurt more than they should.
Despite what people might say about the weird logic in old games like Monkey Island, I feel like they had a twisted logic and a nice comedy to them, which Detective Gallo doesn't always hit. The game is usually pretty direct in telling you what the end goal is, but the intermediate steps are so far removed, that you'll question whether you are really accomplishing anything at times.
The presentation is the best part of the game. The low number of frames in most animations isn't enough to ruin them, and the artists managed to produce something nice to look at even with this limitation.
Ultimately, the game is not bad, but it's neither funny enough nor does it have a compelling enough story to make it a worthwhile experience, unless you are a really big fan of point and click games. Games both recent and old offer much more, so it's hard to recommend investing your time in it. It's a pity, because it feels like with better direction, what was here could have been turned into a very good adventure.
