Description

Like so many children, Tim was a victim of sexual abuse.

Twenty years later, while playing Orco Park, a videogame from his childhood, his memories will come rushing back along with a flood of questions : How could this have happened? Who knew? How has it shaped him? What does “normal” even mean?

Written by Pierre Corbinais (Haven, Road 96: Prologue, Bury Me, My Love), Wednesdays seeks to raise awareness about child sexual abuse through a surprisingly uplifting story.

A mosaic of stories and characters

Wednesdays tells a fragmented story through multiple perspectives.

Build rides and embellishments in Orco Park to unlock Tim’s memories in the order you see fit.

Step into the shoes of Tim’s relatives and try to piece together the tangled memories of his past.

Unveil a moving and sincere story dealing with intrafamilial sexual abuse without any taboo but with a lot of heart.

Two colorful art styles for the price of one

Wednesdays blends two distinct yet complementary art styles. Tim’s memories come to life through the work of comic artist Exaheva (Mekka Nikki, Still Heroes) and draw inspiration from alternative comics and graphic novels. Orco Park is designed by pixel artist Nico Nowak (There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension), evoking the charm of 90s classic video games.

A game everyone can play

Part video game, part graphic novel, Wednesdays has been designed to be accessible to players of all kinds, and even non-players!

A wide range of settings ensure that the experience can be tailored to suit anyone’s needs.

Authentic voices

Wednesdays doesn’t just aim to break the silence around child sexual abuse, it also provides a platform for several of its team members to have they voices heard, as artists, and as victims.

The game does not include any graphic representation of sexual abuse, and even if its topic might sound grim, Wednesdays is above all about trust, hope and healing.

Accessibility

Accessibility has been taken into account throughout the production of Wednesdays:

- Mouse, keyboard and joystick (joystick or D-pad) support;

- Adjustable text size (5 levels);

- Highly legible alternative font (Luciole);

- Manual or automatic text scrolling, with adjustable speed and preview;

- No precision or speed gameplay nor complex sequences.

More details on the accessibility of Wednesdays are available on ARTE's website.

style over substance, as usual

progress isn't saved when you quit, an instant dealbreaker. most chapters aren't that long but it's a comic book, ever heard of a bookmark? and it would've been great if the long, unavoidable disclaimer shoved into the player's face didn't spoil plot points before the game proper even started. tell people there are sensitive topics, even though they should know the gist, and let them expand the rest of the text if they want. weirdly enough, the content warning option in the main menu is like this, with a 'detailed description' button, except even the single-screen pop-up mentions stuff I would've liked to find out as the story unfolded. as a 2-hour visual novel, there's practically no gameplay, but text display is instant. not silent though, one character has some grunts and every speech bubble appears with some sort of sound effect. why? the amusement park mini-game is mostly to trigger the next chapter, earlier ones can be revisited here too, plus some decorations and clicking on random stuff, nothing too exciting. a warning can be brought up for every scene before building a ride or from the pause menu, which is a, overkill and b, even more spoilery, but also c, entirely optional, as these are the only places where they're done as they should be. on-demand, spoiler-free descriptions (the kids are playing in a room) with the details button and a spoiler warning when clicked. except there's no point anymore, the whole thing was spoiled in great detail 5 seconds in. there are some meaningless choices, way too many ellipses (about half the speech bubbles), not enough punctuation and a few typos. the journal stores all the dialog and there's a skip scene option. mouse, keyboard and controller support, controls aren't rebindable, alternatives are available. despite the controls screen saying arrows are for the cursor and wasd for the camera, both work when making decisions, the camera only applies to the theme park. keyboard is much faster there than the mouse for some reason. there's chapter select in the main menu as well, and settings, available anytime, are resolutions, windowed mode, languages, font type and size, auto text scroll toggle with some speed options, sfx and music/ambient volume (why not separate, and with one for 'speech'?), plus a drag & drop toggle and a park cursor speed setting that only applies to keyboard movement, mouse-related stuff can't be changed. and the song during the credits is loud as hell regardless of volume settings, nice farewell. so yeah, important and disturbing issues, emotional stuff, pretty pictures, shame about the spoilers, unnecessary dialog padding and missing accessibility features despite their efforts, also mentioned on the store page (said efforts warrant 2 stars instead of 1). 10 bucks or even half of it is pretty steep for what it is too.

Astute Accessibility: *Wednesdays*

*Wednesdays* is the first piece of art that I've written about in the context of accessibility to be astutely accessible, not just somewhat* or mostly** so. Much of this has to do with its generally thorough approach to safety for people with different disabilities. For those with OCD and/or PTSD, there are detailed descriptions of all of its mature elements on both its store page (where possible) and in-game menus, as well as in-game warnings for each chapter. Those with motion sickness have access to a, for me, rarely-seen-elsewhere setting to disable repeated animations in the top-down park-management-lite section of *Wednesdays* -- a setting with an icon that should have had its function explained from the start. And, those with processing-related disabilities can make use of different fonts and font sizes, as well as an auto scroll setting that has adjustable speeds. Unfortunately, for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, although there are visible onomatopoeias within chapters, captions for sounds made by Orco, the amusement park owner of a game within *Wednesdays*, and the lyrics for a song that plays at the end of the game, are nowhere to be seen. While *Wednesdays* does have a handful of flaws, which may affect different people to varying degrees, they are not enough of a hindrance for me to deny it an overall positive reception. Not when its developers' willingness to, at release, implement unfortunately uncommon and normalized settings alike means that there is a piece of art that finally sets the standard for what it means to be astutely accessible. *This is in reference to a review of mine entitled "(Somewhat) Astute Accessibility: *OneShot*." **This is in reference to a review of mine entitled "(Mostly) Astute Accessibility: *DISCOPUP*."

Différent

Wednesdays is a unique game of his kind, adressing a sensitive topic with a very stylish and positive way. It won’t please everybody, it is not really a gaming experience but an interactive proposition, that is much more like « cinéma d’arts et d’essais » than « blockbuster »

An important game

An important game that everyone should play. (except if you think save states have any relevance in that context, then maybe you should touch grass instead)
