Slime King Games does what Nintendon't

If, like me, you miss the classic Zelda games, before Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom or Echoes of Wisdom, you're in luck, Under the Island is the game we've been waiting for. I picked it up on a whim, not really knowing what to expect, just because the graphic style reminded me a lot of Minish Cap, and ended up with one of my favourite games of recent memory. Under the Island is a pixel-art 2D top-down action adventure, much like the classic Legend of Zelda 2D games, with a strong emphasis on exploration. It adds its own spin to the Zelda formula by introducing some new items that feel fresh, and even turning some classics into way more useful versions (the shovel is not only used to dig for treasure and switches, but it has attack and defense capabilities, on top of puzzle-solving and traversal). The setting is extremely cozy, feels like a nice playable saturday morning cartoon, with a bunch of people to meet, animals to pet and feed, secrets to unveil, places to go. It's a "feel good game", and if that's not your thing, don't bother with it. Personally, I loved the intro messages telling me to celebrate each bit of progress, to take breaks and come back fresh, to grab a coffee, tea, cereal or a pillow; it beats "hey, we made the tiniest bit of effort to make this game playable with keyboard and mouse, but you're playing it wrong if you're not using an Xbox controller!" that way too many games feature. It took me about 20 hours to finish, from the start to the end boss, taking my sweet time exploring and taking the whole thing in; if you're an "uber l33t pr0" you'll probably beat it in eight minutes and 17 seconds, so congrats to you! I've been revisiting it, just tying up loose ends, and am now clocking at 25 hours with 100% achievements -- the very first game I cared enough to 100%. I can't recommend it enough. If you like action-adventure titles with gorgeous pixel art, do yourself a favour and grab it. It's just THAT good. Seriously.

More than just Zelda

On the surface the game has the feeling of classic Zelda games like A Link to The Past and Link's Awakening but it offers enough variety to allow it to stand on it's own. The world is a modern style setting but with fitting sci-fi and fantasy elements and though the story has a serious objective it is a very chill and light hearted experience. Exploration is engaging with the map opening up as you find new equipment which also allows to to revisit previous areas to find any new routes for hidden items and upgrades. Combat is typical for this style of game but does have more variety with enemies requiring diverse strategies. Along with boss encounters it also has challenge encounters where you will need to solve puzzles or meet a specific goal to complete the area. Overall it is a great experience and everything from the settings, colour pallet, and the music really help give a fun, relaxing, and rewarding time.

Do you like Zelda?

If so, buy it. You know what you're getting and I say that in a good way. I very much enjoyed my time with this world and the exploration is top notch. The combat takes a backseat to the exploration in this one, but it's perfectly serviceable. 5 stars!

What if Zelda was a redhead?

Under The Island uses Legend of Zelda as a template, but still manages to find its voice. This game is filled with cool mechanics and wonderfully unique gameplay challenges.

Great game!

Had a lot of fun with this one. Perfectly judged difficulty, fun exploration, beautiful pixel art, and a great soundtrack. If you've ever enjoyed 2D Zeldas, you'll find a lot to love here.
