Description

What began as a conflict over the transfer of consciousness from flesh to machines escalated into a war which has decimated a million worlds. The Core and the Arm have all but exhausted the resources of a galaxy in their struggle for domination. Both sides now crippled beyond repair, the remnants of their armies continue to battle on ravaged planets, their hatred fuelled by over four thousand years of total war. This is a fight to the death. For each side, the only acceptable outcome is the complete elimination of the other.

Total Annihilation (TA) is a real-time strategy (RTS) video game created by Cavedog Entertainment under the guidance of lead designer Chris Taylor. It was released on September 30, 1997, and was the first RTS game to feature 3D units and terrain. Two expansion packs were released: The Core Contingency on April 30, 1998, and Battle Tactics exactly 2 months later on June 30, 1998. When TA was released, the minimum computer requirements were a Pentium 100 MHz processor and 16 MB of RAM. Of course, these requirements were for computers in 1997; modern day machines easily exceed those recommended specifications, but it is still recommended to have a 1 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM for the updated game engine.

In the distant future, the galaxy is ruled by a central body of humans and artificial intelligences called the Core (a contraction of "Consciousness Repository"). The Core's technological and economic triumphs have allowed humanity to colonize most of the Milky Way and enjoy peace and prosperity. However, the balance is broken by a technological breakthrough that allows the consciousness of a human being to be reliably transferred into a machine, thereby theoretically granting infinite life, in a process called "patterning." Following a mandate imposed on humanity by the Core requiring everyone to undergo patterning as a public health measure, a rebel band is formed out of colonies from the edges of the galaxy (hence their name, the Arm), whose members refused to leave their natural bodies to join the Core's machines. A war lasting 4,000 years followed, with the Arm mass-producing clones as pilots for its vehicles and the Core duplicating consciousness-embedded microchips to pilot its own machines.

  • Includes Total Annihilation and both its expansion packs — The Core Contingency and Battle Tactics.
  • A timeless classic that has won over 57 awards!
  • Epic battles with hundreds of units accompanied by frantic music composed by Jeremy Soule and hundreds of available mods.
  • Fully-articulated 3D units and buildings, with a diverse complement of unit types — for example, aircraft, amphibious tanks, infantry bots (kbots), vehicles, hovercraft, ships, submarines, unit production factories, powerful stationary defenses, and long-range weapons. A unique tracking feature allows players to follow single units, entire armies, or even projectiles across the landscape.
  • True 3D terrain that units can climb over, into, and around, on extra-large 3D-generated maps. TA runs comfortably in high resolutions and even on modern dual monitor setups, so players can see more of the battlefield.
  • Numerous world types to do battle on, such as grasslands, forests, deserts, archipelagos, open water, lava, metal, ice, crystal, acid, and even moons.
  • More than 150 official units and 25 official missions per side in a single player campaign. The Core Contingency expansion pack added 75 new units (including the infamous Krogoth), 50 new maps, 25 new missions, and 6 new world types. Battle Tactics added 4 new units, 6 new maps, and 100 new missions. A final patch (version 3.1c, and included here) added 6 new units, including a resurrection kbot!
  • Detailed and exciting campaigns that focus on their respective side's leaders, the Commanders. The stories of either the Core or the Arm start with an effort to defend the protagonist's home world and initiate a turning point in the war, followed by a series of battles on numerous planets and moons (using Galactic Gates as a form of faster-than-light transportation), before a final strike on the enemy's home world: either on the Arm's bucolic Empyrean or the Core's artificial Jupiter Brain world of Core Prime. Mission objectives include protecting a vital structure or area, capturing a pivotal enemy unit, or simply eliminating all enemy units. More powerful units and weapons are gradually unlocked throughout the campaigns after specific missions or events.
  • Single-player skirmish battles and full multiplayer support, allowing players to watch and join battles, and form allied teams to share resources, information, and units.
  • Highly advanced weaponry, including lasers, energy machine guns (EMGs), starburst missiles, plasma shells, lightning pulses, paralyzers, and nuclear warheads.
  • Variables such as gravity, tides, and wind to disrupt the effectiveness of certain weapon types or to enhance resource production.
  • Intelligence measures to detect or jam enemy units using radar and sonar, the ability to cloak or provide stealth shielding for units, and the means to revive destroyed units from their wreckages.

Greatest RTS, still being played today!

TA might be 24 years old at the time of writing this, but it's gameplay, incredible 3D engine, and graphics still stands up today. From competitive online gameplay, to enjoying the single player campaign, this game has something for everyone! I've been playing TA offline since 01' and online since 05'. It has provided me with years of fun and epic battles! Some lasting more than 3 hours per game! There is still an active online community, and a dedicated discord (TA universe) for finding players, discussion, and everything TA! https://discord.gg/xuK7cWXt Nowadays, Most people are playing modded versions of the original game. The main ones being ProTA, Escalation, Mayhem, Zero, and kingdoms. I, Personally play the relatively new, ProTA mod. A mod made by TAG_Venom, a long time TA Pro, and play tested by a string of long time, expert TA players. It's goal is to stay true to the original game, making balance and unit tweaks, to make all units useful and playable. DL here https://www.tauniverse.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46564 ESC is a well made mod, if you want the bigger units and explosions, but is far different to the original game. There are 2 main places to play TA nowadays. TA FOREVER https://www.taforever.com/ The new server on the block, TAF is seen as the future platform to play TA. It is purpose built, with some incredible features, which is constantly being improved. https://www.taforever.com/ You can also play on Gameranger. http://www.gameranger.com/ You won't regret buying TA. An all time classic!

Yessss!!!!!

Every once in a while , GOG will surprise me with a new release that is worth my while. Tonight, when I made a weekend visit to see the sales and promos, low and behold, TA is staring me in the face. I about shat my shorts! Of all the games I have wished I could play again, this was never one I thought would happen. I spent HOURS any given weekend playing this game. My wife stil remembers me glued to the screen of my AST P166 clunker drooling over this game. Every glowing, almost orgasmic review you have read here abotut TA is absolutely true. There have been other great rts games but NONE have EVER come close to the granduer of this gem. So buy it already. It will be the best $5.99 you have ever spent here.

A standard in the RTS genre to this day.

This game is amazing! *Large scale battles (500 unit limit). *Unit variety: Tanks, Mechs, Ships, Submarines, Fighters & Bombers, transport units (to move ground units), and a wide are of base defenses (some examples include missile towers, long range canons, AA towers, Laser turrets and more). *Balance: There are nuke launchers and anti-nuke launchers. Bombers and anti-air fighters, ships and submarines. But there is still fun weapons like the very long range, massively strong, VERY expensive, slow to build......Big Bertha Cannon!!! You don't want to be on the business of this bad boy. So build some bombers!!!! *Simple Resource Management: There are just 2 resources. Metal also called "mass", and energy. That's it! (It is always exiting to build a nuclear power plant - to support things like laser weapon equipped units - and watch your energy level sky rocket). *2 Unique Sides: Arm and Core. These two sides are balanced but are very different in appearance. *Variety of Battles Fields!!!! From the surface of Mars spotted with lava lakes, to the moon, islands, forests, and seas of oil covers with solid metal islands. *Music: The music is wonderful and intense and compliments the game perfectly!!! Last and best: MODS! MODS! MODS! I strong community has supported Total Annihilation since it's release in 1998 (or there about). Hundreds of unique and amazing units are available (tanks with gatling cannons, bomber with shields, aircraft carries, mechs! mechs! mechs!, fusion power plants that power weapons of mass destruction, flying battleships that have aircraft repair pads, and even F-22 fighters) to add to the game , maps of every type, total conversions, the list is very long. If you haven't played this games AND are an RTS fan.....DOWN LOAD THIS KNOW!!! The price is a steal!!! You will get hooked....you've been warned.

Epic beyond belief

Nothing compares even today with the thrill of up to 10 players battling it out in this game. There are dozens of strategic tools and a counter to each of them with dozens of land, sea and air units of all types. A range of sizes of tanks/mechs and an array of long range units from fast launching missile units, artillery, mobile anti-air, etc. What takes the cake and makes this epic is the sheer destruction of some of these structures and units. Extremely long rage big bertha cannons that'll drain your power quick and nukes that destroy an entire screen of all structures that make C&C nukes look like grenades. Add the fact that units can be queued up and given orders automatically you're in for some extremely crazy battles especially if you play on a resource rich metal map.

Still the greatest lan party RTS

When I was 11 my friends and I were looking for a good game to play at a LAN party. One of my friends, James, brought this scratch disk of something called Total Annihilation for us to try out. We played from 7 pm to 4 am, our skirmishes and raids turning into massive pitched battles with hundreds and even thousands of units dying every minute. That night we all fell in love with what we still consider the best RTS to ever come out. 9 years later we still play Total Annihilation, albeit with massive unit packs and a few alterations of our own creation. IF you're looking for a game that even someones dinky laptop can run, and has a lot of life this is your game.
