Description

After a mysterious flash of light in the night sky, bush pilot Will Mackenzie and his passenger Dr. Astrid Greenwood crash in the brutal wilderness of Northern Canada. Separated at the crash site, the two struggle to make their way to remote Perseverance Mills, a mountain community plagued by a mysterious illness. The majestic aurora flashes across the night sky, everything electronic seems to have been neutralized, and the wolves are howling as the frigid winter threatens the survivors of remote Great Bear Island.

Will you survive long enough to find each other in Perseverance Mills? And what mysteries will you uncover along the way? Because that is no ordinary light in the sky, and this is no ordinary winter. And the answers you find along the way might very well define the future far beyond the rocky shores of Great Bear Island’s vast frontier.

WINTERMUTE is the five-episode narrative mode for The Long Dark. The episodic story builds on the award-winning survival sandbox gameplay that has put The Long Dark on the top of many "best of" lists since the game's launch in 2014, adding a thoughtful narrative experience that explores the history and current mysteries of Great Bear Island, as survivors there comes to terms with the "Quiet Apocalypse". WINTERMUTE tells the story of bush pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood as they race to save a remote community from the ravages of this deadly wilderness in a world where all electronics have gone dark, possibly for good.

Each WINTERMUTE Episode features between 5-8 hours of story-driven survival gameplay, ~60 minutes of cinematics, a custom soundtrack, and achievements (platform allowing).

Features voice performances by award-winning actors Jennifer Hale, Mark Meer, David Hayter, Elias Toufexis, and others, and a haunting soundtrack by composer Cris Velasco.

The episodic story-mode for THE LONG DARK, WINTERMUTE, includes four of the five episodes that form WINTERMUTE, and represent approximately 30 hours of gameplay. Episode Five is included in the price of the game, and will be unlocked for free when it is released.

Bush pilot Will Mackenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood are separated after their plane crashes deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness in the aftermath of a mysterious flash of light in the sky. Struggling to survive as he desperately searches for Astrid, Mackenzie comes across the small town of Milton, where he begins to understand the scope of this quiet apocalypse.

Mackenzie’s search for Astrid takes him deeper into the savage Winter wilderness. A mysterious trapper may be the key to finding Astrid, but can he be trusted?

In the aftermath of events in Milton, an enigmatic stranger rescues Dr. Astrid Greenwood (player character) from near death. Facing the blizzards of Pleasant Valley, Astrid must bring all her skills as a doctor to bear on the survivors she encounters. But will she find Mackenzie, and get closer to the mystery that's taking them to Perseverance Mills?

A murderous gang of convicts has captured Mackenzie. Desperate to escape one of the darkest corners of Great Bear Island, he must somehow survive his fiercest enemy yet. Can Mackenzie recover the Hardcase, continue his search for Astrid, and also save the innocents caught up in this deadly confrontation?

NOTE: Unlike Survival Mode, WINTERMUTE does not feature permadeath. You can save your progress as you play.

Average at best

I’ve owned The Long Dark throughout its entire development cycle. I first owned it on Steam, then GOG, then Steam again during its GOG hiatus, and finally back on GOG again. I also have a Switch version that I never played. Mainly because I can not believe they would not bring graphics on ultra for Switch 2. Anyway, needless to say, this review comes from a loyal “back in the day” fan. I really wanted to give it three stars. And believe me, it is not that terrible. The story is alright. The graphics are alright. The soundtrack and overall pacing are alright too. Who knows, if you are new to The Long Dark, you might enjoy it a lot more. The reason I can only grant it two stars comes down mainly to three things I just cannot accept: First: The Story Again, if you are new to the franchise, it might be alright for you. For me, what started out really interesting after Episode 3 has been completely dumbed down throughout Episodes 4 and 5. The promise was bigger. The lead-up to it was bigger. The potential was absolutely missed here. The story is disappointing because of how mediocre it is. No big surprises, no risks, no shocking twists or turns. The Long Dark has been in development for more than 10 years... the story being told is not good enough for that. Not by a long shot! Second: Graphics Again, as a newcomer, there is probably nothing to be too mad about. For me, it would have been great to see the graphics naturally improve throughout the Episodes. I love how the overall visual style is timeless in the sense that it is not “ugly”, so even with improved graphics, while keeping the same art style throughout the Episodes, one could still easily start over with the older episodes and enjoy those “back to the roots” graphics. This is disappointing at best. Third: Gameplay No spoilers here. Just incredibly disappointing. Especially Episode 5 has turned into a walking simulator without any other side quests or collectibles. Nor is the player really pushed to explore and spend more time in this strange world. All in all, it feels like the backers’ and customers’ money throughout this past decade and beyond has been used in ways other than for the Wintermute story, and I believe this is what a lot of us have known for a while. I did not go in with high expectations and still, I just cannot grant you that third star, Hinterland. I can’t. I hope TLD 2 will improve, because you have not lost me yet. However, I will wait for a finished product and some first reviews before going in. Something I didn’t do and didn’t regret up until Episode 3.

Never again

Bought the game in 2017 with the promise that the missing Story episodes will be delivered soon. Now we have 2026, so much for "soon". I totally understand that a small company needs time to fund their work und develeopment, but obviously there was enough time and manpower to develop 8739892 updates for an otherwise already fully functional survival mode, but not for delivering the paying customer the content that he paid for. Now it seems completed, finally. And too late. I will never even spend one more penny on a product of this company.
