Bright lights flare across the night sky. The wind rages outside the thin walls of your wooden cabin. A wolf howls in the distance. You look at the meager supplies in your pack, and wish for the days before the power mysteriously went out. How much longer will you survive?

Welcome to THE LONG DARK, the innovative exploration-survival experience Wired magazine calls "the pinnacle of an entire genre".  THE LONG DARK  challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster.

In THE LONG DARK, you are getting both the genre-defining Survival Mode, honed after years of open development and frequent updates, and the award-winning episodic narrative mode, WINTERMUTE.

THE LONG DARK is the free-form, non-narrative Survival Sandbox that has defined the genre since launching in 2014. After years of open development and dozens of major updates, THE LONG DARK now stands at the pinnacle of the entire genre. Survival is your only goal, and death your only end. Make your own survival story with every game.

The game that defined death for the survival genre. When you die in Survival, your save is deleted. Every decision matters.

The game challenges players to think for themselves by providing the information but never the answers. You have to earn the right to survive.

Monitor your Hunger, Thirst, Fatigue, and Cold as you struggle to balance resources with the energy needed to obtain them. Every action costs Calories, and time is your most precious resource. Choose your path carefully.

Over 100 gear items including Tools, Light Sources, Weapons, First Aid supplies, Clothing, and more.

Explore a 50 square kilometer Northern Canadian wilderness spanning 12 major regions and all the zones that connect them in search of life-saving supplies. Distant mountains, coastal towns, mines, farmlands, and a huge expanse of brutal winter wilderness to test your survival mettle.

Hunt, fish, trap, climb, map, search for life-saving food and gear items, and try to avoid dying from the hostile wildlife, succumbing to hypothermia, frostbite, or dysentery (amongst other uncomfortable afflictions), find and maintain your life-saving gear. Hunt and be hunted by: Wolves, Bears, Moose, Rabbits, Deer, Crows, and more to come in future updates.

Four distinct Experience Modes let you find a challenge level you are comfortable with, such as Pilgrim Mode, which is meant to be quiet and pensive, all the way to Interloper Mode, where only the most experienced survivors have a chance to last a week. If none of the four Experiences suits you, use Custom Mode settings to tailor your Survival Mode game to your specific tastes.

Features the music of Sascha Dikiciyan.

Several standalone Challenge Modes offer objective-based experiences designed to last 1-3 hours each, such as Whiteout -- the race to gather enough supplies to prepare for a monster blizzard. Or Hunted, where you need to escape a murderous Bear. Complete them to unlock Feats that provide long-term gameplay benefits in Survival Mode. Additional Challenges include: Hopeless Rescue, Nomad, Archivist, As the Dead Sleep, and Escape the Darkwalker.

Included in THE LONG DARK is the episodic story-mode  WINTERMUTE.  Four of the five episodes that form WINTERMUTE are included, and Episode Five is in development, slated for release soon. This will bring the WINTERMUTE storyline to its conclusion.

The first four episodes of WINTERMUTE represent approximately 30 hours of gameplay. Episode Five is included in the price of the game, and will be unlocked for free when it is released.

Bush pilot Will Mackenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood are separated after their plane crashes deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness in the aftermath of a mysterious flash of light in the sky. Struggling to survive as he desperately searches for Astrid, Mackenzie comes across the small town of Milton, where he begins to understand the scope of this quiet apocalypse.

Mackenzie’s search for Astrid takes him deeper into the savage Winter wilderness. A mysterious trapper may be the key to finding Astrid, but can he be trusted?

In the aftermath of events in Milton, an enigmatic stranger rescues Dr. Astrid Greenwood (player character) from near death. Facing the blizzards of Pleasant Valley, Astrid must bring all her skills as a doctor to bear on the survivors she encounters. But will she find Mackenzie, and get closer to the mystery that's taking them to Perseverance Mills?

A murderous gang of convicts has captured Mackenzie. Desperate to escape one of the darkest corners of Great Bear Island, he must somehow survive his fiercest enemy yet. Can Mackenzie recover the Hardcase, continue his search for Astrid, and also save the innocents caught up in this deadly confrontation?

NOTE: Unlike Survival Mode, WINTERMUTE does not feature permadeath. You can save your progress as you play.

In addition to releasing the remaining episode of WINTERMUTE, we intend to continue updating Survival Mode with limited free updates alongside our paid DLC Expansion Pass, TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY. This is on top of the over 100 updates we have made to the game over the past 8 years of open development. Keep in mind that your purchase of THE LONG DARK entitles you to all five episodes of WINTERMUTE without extra charge.

Best single player survival experience

I'm happy to see this back on GOG. I got it for free on Epic and the DLC was the only purchase I ever did in that store. Yes, the game is THIS good! There are plenty of options in the market for who like "base-building-with-buddies", but few actually focused on the Single Player experience. This is what set TLD apart, and also the focus on "actual" survival mechanics. For most other games, finding food and water gets irrelevant after 10 minutes. You punch a tree, make a spear, kill the first dinosaur and get 100 units of meat, problem solved. TLD, on the other hand, is a resource management game. Every calorie and stick counts. Moreover, time is THE most precious resource. You don't have fancy animations for chopping trees, just a prompt and time passing. But you'll have to take into account that you may be freezing outside, or that you'll simply get exhausted. I think good survival games usually have fatigue mechanics and weight-based inventory (instead of slot-based). Here you have both. Is it grindy? Yes, but here the grind IS the game. Is it boring? Well, survival is boring, as one man once said. This game is truly more Les Stroud than Bear Gyllis. Don't worry, you'll still have plenty of exploration and deadly active threats, such as the wolves. You don't have actual melee, just another king of prompt, but shooting is like in any FPS. All this gives a wide array of mechanics and gameplay to deal with. Craftingt is there and it may look limited, but because there is one or two options to fulfill every purpose, not a tiered system of progressively "+1" items. One thing that a lot of people like but it's missing is base building. For me, that is for the best. You are dealing with a quiet apocalypse, so why would you stop to build a stone castle? There are plenty of shelters around the maps, every one a potential temporary base to get resources, evey one a potential death trap that feels "safe", but you should leave behind to keep surviving. The DLC introduced light base customization elements that are welcome, such as the fact that you can organize storage items, instead of going up and down stairs all the time just because all your gound floor boxes are full. There is a Story Mode that is still missing the last episode, which will arrive "soon". But the bread, butter and juicy moose meat of the game is Survival Mode. Starting a new playthrough in an unknow map were some of the best gaming experiences that I ever had. I usually explored one or two maps in one playthtough and then, after getting more or less stable, restarted in a different area. After knowing all the maps, cranked difficulty to the highest levels and tried again, it's a whole new experience (albeit don't try Interloper in unkwnown maps, is just frustrating). And then again again, because the randomized-but-meaningful-loot makes every run unique. Even if you don't squeeze thousands of hours of gameplay like me, you'll have plenty of value for your money. I'm sad that the development cycle is closing and we won't get more maps regularly, because there aren't many similar games around (you may check the excelent Survival: Fountain of Youth, but this one is more a story-driven linear experience). So I'll keep coming back, at least until we have TLD 2: Blackfrost, sometime in the next.. err... decades?

Fantastic survival adventure

This game is fantastic. But you will need time to understand and learn its mechanichs. The history, the ambiance, the music, the fear of the cold, they were very well designed by the developers! IF you like survival in its core, go on it.

So quiet, so cold, so deadly, what was..

Played on Steam: over 700 hours This game will kill you. Whether it's the cold that gets you, scurvy, wolves, starvation, thirst, a mountain lion, or a bear, you will die. It could even be a fall. But that's what makes this game so challenging. It's you, your wits, whatever you can gather, against the worst -- and I DO mean the worst -- that Mother Nature can throw at you. The weather is brutal. Blizzards pop up seemingly at random, although, if you play the game for a while, you get a feel for the weather. Cold wind is a killer. It saps your strength, and your heat, quickly draining you of your will, and warmth, to live. The wildlife is what it is. Depending on the mode (level you're playing), the wildlife may just give you a wide berth. Or, they just may actively hunt you down. Nothing quite like waking up to find a bear or moose trying to share your sleeping bag at 3 am! The terrain is gorgeous! The devs have put a lot of effort into giving us a lot of different features and areas in which to play, whether it's the the marshy ground in the Forlorn Muskeg (watch that thin ice!). There's mountainous terrain in Hushed River Valley, Timber Wolf Mountain, or even the Sundered Pass region, where you can find lost mining camps. In the Contaminated Zone, you can find a mine where you might want to find a hazmat suit, and watch out for the contaminated wildlife, especially the wolves. Then there's the Forsaken Airfield, an airport on a wide open plain. This area can be especially hard to travel across, especially during blizzards, and the frequent dense fog, which has...a unique property. If you lose your way, you could easily freeze to death just feet from a structure as you've wandered in circles, trying to find it, but you couldn't see. These are just a few of the areas in The Long Dark. It's extremely challenging, there's no real guide, it's learn as you go. I just watched a guy, who'd never played before, start playing on the hardest difficulty just to see how long it would take him to make it to one in-game month. He died to a wolf at the end of the thirtieth day, so I'm gonna give it to him! It took him over 180 videos on YouTube to make it, but he's pretty expert at it, now. I'm so proud of him!

Treatment

I remember these crybabies pulling their game from GeForce Now for not "asking permission". If its your kind of survival game, fine. There are plenty of them spamming the market, but if you want to come here and give money to someone who decides it isn't good enough, go ahead. I knew it was a matter of time before they were on here. I won't buy it again because how a studio treats its customers is just as important as the game itself.
