Jan Scientist can finally pursue his true calling. While other Jans left, he stayed to lead a team of new specialists - assembled by and from himself. Only a scientific crew of perfectly aligned altered Jan Scientists can offer the expertise needed to unravel the Oasis phenomenon.

 

Studying nature's survival here in space is a life-defining opportunity. However, this goal-oriented plan of the Jan Scientists might not be so apparent to Jan Geologist, Biologist, Chemist, or Physicist.

 

The Oasis, a lush paradise that shouldn't exist, becomes the mystery you will obsessively try to solve.

 

Terraforming the nine arenas unlocks it, forcing the landscape to yield answers. But with each seemingly right step on a research path, the planet responds with implacable earthquakes and radiation, hinting at secrets best left undiscovered.

 

Your biggest hurdle? Years-long planetary cycles of scorching sunrises that force you underground. Setting a functional underground base requires building in varied soils, constructing new components, and researching modules like the Cryosleep Chamber, which buys time to witness your scientific actions' long-term effects.

 

Still, even in cryo-slumber, increasingly vicious cycles wear down your crew’s readiness to work.

 

Each planetary cooldown offers a brief window to freely explore a dramatically changed surface.

 

Terraformed landscape opens new building possibilities, spawns bonus-providing pickables, and lets you evolve your research-essential technology by extracting and refining new planetary resources.  Specialised structures further let you transform, combine, and amplify what you gather.

 

Field Labs introduce new assignments for alters to continue their work while you cryosleep. But will they change once faced with the vulnerability of ageing?

Jan Scientist proves as compelling a character as ever, and his specialized Alters are more than a match in terms of charisma. Cryo-sleep adds a unique twist to long-term decision-making. Sharp writing and presentation, just like the base game.

Peak game gets peak DLC

If you loved the original alters you will love this, the discovery of the oasis at the end of the original game and the questions it left behind will finally be answered.

I couldn't wait for it to be over

I honestly don't know how this DLC could get so many things about the base game SO wrong. Let's start with the positives: the ending is great and the Alters themselves are quite fun. That's where the good parts end. Now for the downsides: 1. There's barely any dialogue throughout the majority of the DLC 2. The majority of the DLC is incredibly boring and tedious grinding of resources. It's not hard. It's not engaging. It just takes time to collect 300 of whatever resource the game asks of you now. At the end my Alters simply did nothing, I just had to wait for everything to collect. 3. It's also not fun to build new pipelines to and from the predetermined spots on the map to assemble 3 new resource types. And it's not fun to grind to build outrageously expensive doublers (let's not ask how do they work, exactly, doubling the material out of nowhere). 4. The Alters (and the main character) barely react to some of the events that I would expect to cause a huge reaction 5. At some point the dialogue starts to blatantly repeat, which makes sense thematically, but makes zero sense in the context, where your player character has ALREADY HAD THIS EXACT CONVERSATION. 6. The dialogue is mostly sciencey sounding torrent of buzzwords that does not mean anything. 7. The game lets you explore freely, but you HAVE TO put the specific structures in predetermined locations. You decided to visit another region instead? Enjoy another cycle with zero story progression. 8. Bugs. Lots and lots of bugs. Blockades don't disappear from the map, you get stuck on textures, you get stuck in the air..

Great return to Alters universe

Just finished the DLC. I enjoyed new gameplay additions and Terraforming is enjoyable. New tech, and integrating anomalies into your resource infrastructure was a nice touch. However, the ending left a sour taste honestly, I was hoping for some more impact and lighter tones, yet the two endings are equally depressing. Maybe that was the writer intent all along, but a happy lighter choice would've been great to see.

Disappointing

Jan Scientist was my favorite Alter because he was practical and understood that things had to be done. I don't know how his Alters ended up being so petty and dramatic to the point that they made me dislike them. Game starts off good but after a while becomes a tedious grind with all the scientific bla bla bla adding very little to the story. Also had many bugs and crashes while playing. Ending was good though, it was what saved the DLC for me.

Tedious and uninteresting

The main game's gameplay is pretty bland, but it had a big cast of Alters that you spend a lot of time with. The environments and story changed between Acts as well. The DLC has none of that. You are stuck in the same spot, where you make painstakingly slow progress for very little reward. The Alters are not fleshed out as much and their side-quests feel like fetch-quests from an MMO. The story itself moves at a glacial pace and tries to make a grand statement at the end, which imo falls flat. The gameplay also contradicts the story - if the Oasis is "safe" and nothing gets destroyed, then why is it a Game Over if you do not enter cryosleep? If it's safe for my Alters, then it should be safe for me. The entire DLC is "Gather resource -> build mcguffin -> place mcguffin -> wait" for the entirety. You cannot do it faster by planning better. You could remove 2/3rds of the DLC and story and vibe would be the same or even a tad better. TL;DR; The base game had much stronger writing and more effort put into it. The DLC feels like a side-project / afterthought. It didn't improve on the main game, and it didn't even deliver more of what's good in the base game. I would wait for a sale.
